2016 Day 216 – 1 Timothy 1

Grace, Mercy, Servant

1 Timothy was written as a letter of encouragement and instruction from Paul to Timothy who was a young leader in the early church. Timothy was one of Paul’s closest companions and was sent to the church at Ephesus to help counter false teachings and to help lead the church. Paul hoped to visit Ephesus in person, but in the meantime, he wrote a letter to help strengthen them in his absence. Paul starts by thanking Christ for allowing him to serve in 1 Timothy 1:12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service. Even Paul recognized that serving is a privilege and can only be done when we acknowledge the mercy and grace granted to us through Christ.

2016 Day 207 – Ephesians 2

Eternity, Grace, Love, Mercy, Salvation

There is nothing any one of us can do to deserve eternal life. God’s grace is how we have come into salvation. In Ephesians 2:8-9 Paul says, 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. God ultimately gives us the gift of salvation because He loves us and He knows we were incapable by our own power to live a life worthy of eternal life. It is a gift from Him which does not require anything of us. We may feel like we owe God something for this gift, but we don’t. His grace is sufficient.

2016 Day 204 – Philemon 1

Philemon 1:16 describes all of us as believers in Christ: no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. Before we knew Christ and trusted in Him for our eternal salvation, we were slaves. After, we became magnitudes better than slaves; we became brothers. Nothing can bless us more than that.

Grace, Love, Mercy

Let us not waste time arguing about things that matter little in the light of eternity. In Romans 14:1 Paul says, Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgement on disputable matters. We are all in different places with our faith, and none of us are in a place to judge one another. God calls us to love Him and love others; nothing more.

Faith, Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Trust

How arrogant are we to ever think that God requires anything from us? God gives to us, not the other way around. In Romans 11:35 Paul says, Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? So many people approach their relationship with God trying to give Him their obedience as payment for salvation. Instead, our obedience is supposed to come as a result of Him giving to us. God requires nothing from us other than our faith and trust in Him.

Grace, Protection, Salvation

The most beautiful thing about salvation is grace. Though we do not deserve to be forgiven of our sin, God gave it to us anyway. In Romans 6:14 it says we are not only forgiven of sin, it is no longer a master over us: For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. While we are by no means perfect, we have an ability to turn to the Holy Spirit for protection and guidance through the draw of this world. We must remember we do not stand alone. God is with us always.

Grace

Grace is a free gift, it is not something we work for. In Romans 4:4 Paul says, Now when a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation. If we had to work for our salvation, there would be no need for grace from God.

Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Power, Strength

As we come to the end of the second letter to the Corinthian church, Paul gives them some final instructions in 2 Corinthians 13:11, Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. Notice how Paul tells them to “Aim” for perfection. He does not say “BE” perfect. God does not want our perfection, He wants a heart that aims for it. In the process we must realize we are weak and God is the only source of power that can give us the strength we need. We will never be perfect on this side of eternity, but we must never stop striving for it. It is through our striving we seek His strength and His perfect plan for our lives.

Grace, Love

Jesus gave up everything so that we could gain it all. In 2 Corinthians 8:9 Paul says, For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. Paul was not talking about monetary riches, but spiritual. He gave up His own access to God and His kingdom to sacrifice for us so that we would know eternity in Heaven with Him. Our debt for sin was paid and for that we must be thankful.

Freedom, Grace, Mercy, Relationship

Though we have freedom in Christ and some things are not wrong in and of themselves, they may not be beneficial to our relationship with Christ. Further, it may not be beneficial as a witness to other believers. This may sound legalistic, but it’s not. In 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 Paul says, 23 “Everything is permissible” – but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible” – but not everything is constructive. 24 Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. Our freedom should not trample on those around us. Freedom is for the benefit of others as much as ourselves.
