2016 Day 86 – Mark 15

After Jesus was crucified, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body to be buried. Pilate, though he was surprised Jesus died so quickly, gave the body to Joseph. In Mark 15:46-47 we read about what Joseph did with Jesus’ body, 46 So Joseph brought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in the tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. So… Today we wait. But tomorrow is coming.

Today is Good Friday, and one of the most painful days in the history of our faith. It all came down to this in Matthew 27:50 And when Jesus had cried out in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. But just remember… Sunday is coming!

Grace, Love, Mercy, Repentance

God asks us for nothing more than repentance. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father did not require anything of the son in order to welcome him home with open arms. In Luke 15:21 the lost son comes to his father, “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'” There was nothing more needed by the father, just like there is nothing needed of us for God to accept us just as we are. No where does it say we must become perfect for Him to accept us. Our change comes from our relationship with Him. Our obedience and love for God comes because He first loved us.

Compassion, Grace

Sometimes all it really takes is for someone to care. In the parable of the fig tree the owner wanted to cut it down because it would not produce fruit, but the man who took care of the vineyard replied in Luke 13:8-9, 8 “‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'” The man did not want to give up on the fig tree and realized all it probably needed was some care and feeding. This is like many people around us who all they may really need is someone who cares enough to invest in them. Who do you know that may need this?

Grace, Repentance

In today’s reading, Jesus’ interaction with the accused adulteress and religious leaders showed His true purpose in coming to earth: grace. John 8:10-11 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” When Jesus provides grace, He doesn’t give us a free license to sin, He gives us freedom from the consequences of sin. After he provides grace, just like He did for the woman, He expects repentance and a changed life.

Whoever is sure they are righteous is not saved because we must acknowledge we don’t have all the answers and our need for Christ in our lives. In Matthew 9:13 Jesus says,  “But go ahead and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Jesus is quoting Hosea 6:6 when he says, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” Jesus doesn’t need our ritualistic sacrifice. What He wants is our recognition of our need for His mercy on us and our need to have mercy on others.

I love the parable Jesus tells of the hidden treasure in Matthew 13:44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” In the parable, the man knew the value of the treasure was so great he was willing to sell everything in order to have it. This is what our relationship with Christ is like; it costs us everything to receive the full value of the treasure of salvation.

Freedom, Grace

In today’s reading I found it very peculiar when Jesus said the following words in Matthew 11:6 “Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.” Jesus was not apologizing for making the establishment uncomfortable with who He was. It was not a statement of regret for His own actions. Jesus was making a statement about the blessings people would receive if they simply removed themselves from what was dictated as right and instead looked to His example of what we are called to do. Because of His sacrifice we are free to serve and love others without the burden or constraints that existed without His mercy and grace.

Eternity, Grace, Mercy

Today we read about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry according to the Gospel of John. The beauty of Jesus coming to save of is the story each of us share as adopted Children of God. John 1:12 says, Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in  his name, he gave the right to become children of God. As adopted children we all share the same benefits. We are God’s children and we all receive the same inheritance of eternal life with Him.

Grace

In today’s reading the authors (The Sons of Korah) describe the city of God where all believers will one day gather together to worship our God. It is always interesting to see how the Old and New Testaments are interwoven to tell one story of God’s grace and mercy.
