2015 Day 45 – Luke 10

Love, Servant

I cannot help but wonder if God looks down on us and wonder why we choose to worry about the things we do. We spend too much of our time worrying about things that have very little significance in the light of eternity. In today’s reading we see Martha upset with Mary because she chose to sit and listen to Jesus instead of helping her in preparations around her home. In Luke 10:41 Jesus says, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” If we look carefully, we do not see Jesus telling Martha that she is doing something wrong, just that Mary has chosen something better. While our choices may seem like good things to do, are they the best thing we can do in serving other’s and allowing ourselves to be used by God?

2015 Day 44 – John 9

Love, Salvation, Servant

When Jesus came as the Messiah, he came to turn everything on it’s head from what the religious leaders expected. John 9:39, Jesus said, “For judgement I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” What the Pharisees believed about the Messiah was only partially true, but they were so concerned about tradition that they missed the details around who the Messiah would be and His purpose. For us, wasting time working towards perfection and forgetting about taking care of and loving others is not why He came. To be Christ-like does not mean to be perfect, it means servanthood to those who need it the most.

Love

The Pharisees in Jesus’ day were very concerned about being “clean”. They worried more about what entered the body than what came out. Their outward relationship with people was not a loving and caring one, but one of judgement and condemnation. Jesus came along and turned everything around. He pointed out that what comes out of you is the more important than what is placed in you. In Matthew 15:19-20 Jesus said, 19 “For out of the heart come evil evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him ‘unclean.’ “ Let us be more concerned with what comes out of our mouths and the actions we produce with our hands than what we put in. This does not mean we can put filth into our minds and expect beautiful things to come out, but it does mean we must be intentional about producing love through our actions and words.

Acceptance, Love

Sometimes we forget that the church is meant to be a hospital for the sick and not a country club for the elite. Jesus made this clear in Matthew 9:12, On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” We must be accepting of everyone in the church no matter how much we may not agree with their choices in life. There is a difference between tolerance and acceptance. We are called to accept everyone who needs our help while not tolerating their sin. This does not mean to shun or shame them, but we love them even when we don’t agree with their choices. In the end, it is God’s job to judge or not.

Love

When Jesus talks about wine and wineskins, He is talking about the Pharisees. Luke 5:38-39 says, 38 “No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’ “ As new wine ages it expands and therefore cannot be put into old, rigid wineskins because it will break the skins with the expanding wine. The Pharisees were like the old wineskins who were too rigid to handle the new covenant (new wine). Jesus could not be contained in the old traditions or rules. We must always work hard to stay pliable and follow Christ’s example of what really matters about the New Covenant; loving God and loving others.

Love, Reflection

Jesus does not call us to judge others, but to love them by His example. Matthew 7:3 says, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” In this video, Clayton Jennings gives a compelling depiction of how Jesus calls us to deal with all sinners, not just those who sin differently than us. He calls us to LOVE them!

Love, Relationship

As believers we are meant to be connected to the Holy Spirit for continuous support, guidance, and love. In John 15:4 Jesus said, Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. Being in constant communion and contact with Jesus through the Holy Spirit is the most important thing in our lives; nothing else matters.

Love, Obedience, Servant

We are supposed to be God’s hands and feet in this life. When we fail to serve God for His glory and His purpose, we fail at our purpose in life. In Matthew 25:40 Jesus says, The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” We are called to serve where service is needed. When we love others through service we bring glory to God and reflect His love on them.

Grace, Love, Mercy

In Matthew 23 there is so much condemnation from Jesus to the Pharisees and teachers of the Law. As we read this, we cannot help but see the similarities of the religious leaders of Jesus’ time and the ones in our present day. Let us all work to avoid becoming like the Pharisees and teachers of the Law, and become more like Jesus’ example of what a believer should be.

Love, Relationship, Salvation

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a person rescued on TV. It’s not that the other people in the story are less important, it’s just exciting to see someone saved from potential death and destruction. In the same way, God’s ultimate desire is to bring each and every person into relationship with Him. While God provisioned a way through Christ’s sacrifice for us, when any one of us comes or returns to Him, there is much rejoicing. In Luke 15:7 Jesus says, I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. It is not that God does not care about the righteous, it is about saving one more of His children from eternal death.
