Faith, Love

For today’s reflection post, I wanted to share a video about Theologian Dwight Peterson and the power of shared faith as a community of believers. Unfortunately, I am unable to embed the video, so I have to share the link for the page where it exists.

http://www.theworkofthepeople.com/losing-my-faith

The following is the synopsis about this video: Theologian Dwight Peterson on the story of the healing of the paralytic in Mark 2 and how others hold our faith when we don’t have any and doubt is prevailing. Dwight has been on hospice (at home) since July 16, 2012, due to deterioration and infection of his hips and pelvis, secondary to the paraplegia he has lived with since 1979. Hospice is for people who are probably in the last six months of life, so no one expected Dwight to still be around now. We’re glad he is.

2013 Day 265 – Job 37-39, Isaiah 8

Love, Protection, Trust

Starting in Job 38, God finally speaks up. God starts by asking Job the following in Job 38:1 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said: 2 “Who is this that obscures my plans with words without knowledge? 3 Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. God proceeds to ask Job a series of questions that Job can not possibly answer. His point to Job is to show him that his questions are not at the heart of the matter. If we trust in God’s love and character, then we will understand there is no higher standard than God Himself. Our only option is to submit to His perfect authority and trust in His care for us.

2013 Day 258 – Job 19-21, Isaiah 2

Love, Redeemer, Trust

While Job continues to suffer and defend his innocence to his friends, he is still able to look to God and know where his redemptions comes from. In Job 19:25 he says, I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. No matter what struggles we face in this life, in the end we can be comforted to know God is in control of it all. God loves and cares for us and wants nothing but what is best for us; even in our suffering.

Goodness, Love

This past week, our pastor spoke about Goodness as one of the Fruits of the Spirit. He used the attached video of Robert McQuilken, who was the President of Columbia Bible College. After 40 years of marriage he found himself torn between to commitments after his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. This is a very touching video that moved me. I hope it is as meaningful to you.

2013 Day 246 – Esther 1-3, Psalm 119:81-96

Love

Today we begin the book of Esther, which is interesting for various reasons. First, it is one of only two books named for women. Second, in it’s original version, no name, title, or pronoun for God appears in it. This caused some church fathers to question it’s inclusion in the canon, but God’s presence is clear throughout the book. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate God’s sovereignty and His loving care for His people. This is a great story filled with drama. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as me.

Faith, Love, Obedience

1 Timothy 6:10 is a verse used by people who think money is good and bad, For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. The reality is that money is neither good or bad. The desire to be rich is what leads people to sin, not the actual possession of wealth. However, there comes a time when money will himder us from stepping out in faith and allowing God to lead us and take care of us. Do not let the love of money be your guide, but let God lead you into using His blessings for the good of His kingdom.

Love

The very first verse of Psalm 118 says everything we need to know about the level of respect and love The Lord deserves from us, 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. First, God is good. He never wants harm to come to us, but through our rebellion the consequences of sin will sometimes hurt us. Second, His love endures for ever. There is nothing we can do to make God stop loving us. His love will never end for us no matter what happens to us or how far we rebel against Him.

Love, Mercy, Relationship

Psalm 109:21 is a very interesting verse, But you, Sovereign Lord, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. The note in my Bible for this verse says the following: “A name is more than a label; it is a representation of character and reputation.” David is pleading with God to live up to His name. “For your name’s sake”, means to live in accordance with His character of both love and mercy. It is ok to plead with God for something. It is ok to call God to act in accordance with His character. Don’t be afraid to have authentic conversations with God. We will know our relationship with Him is maturing when we begin to ask as many questions as we ask for favors and requests.

Love

In today’s reading, Psalm 108:3-4 stood out to me, 3 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. 4 For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. In this Psalm, David is painting a picture of how great God’s love truly is. When we think of something reaching to the sky, its an easy concept because of modern technology with planes and rockets. In David’s time, reaching for the sky was something great and difficult to conceptualize. David is describing love on a very grand scale. How can we paint the picture of God’s great love to us? What are the things that point to a love that is so grand it is difficult to describe?

Grace, Love, Mercy

Psalm 106:44-46 is a wonderful picture of God’s love for His people who deserve nothing more than judgment for their sins, 44 Yet he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; 45 for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented. 46 He caused all who held them captive to show them mercy. God does not limit Him grace and mercy based on our faithfulness to Him.
