2012 Day 216 – Romans 10

Grace, Mercy

I have a very simple thought today and it comes from verse 11, As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” I pray that God reminds me daily to show His grace and mercy to everyone around me no matter who they are or what they have done. It is easy for me to pick out the big sins and feel they are different than any other form of disobedience. But God’s mercy and grace spans the spectrum of all sin. May I be reminded daily when I react to people’s imperfections around me. The truth is, my imperfections are more like planks when compared to their thorns.

2012 Day 215 – Romans 9

Mercy, Power

Verses 14-16 in today’s reading are tough ones for me, 14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” 16 It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. Don’t get me wrong, I trust in God wholeheartedly, but my human understanding sometimes gets in the way. Earlier in the chapter, Paul uses the example of Jacob and Esau; one of the twins He had mercy and the other He allowed to be hardened. It doesn’t make sense to me, but God’s plan is perfect. He does things for a specific purpose in mind and I need to accept it and wait to see how it plays out. As I get older, I am beginning to understand there are something’s I will never understand. There are some things I don’t need to understand. I simply need to trust God and know He can turn what seems to be a bad thing into something that is used for His glory. More importantly, grace comes from God alone. There is nothing I can do to receive any more or less of it. It comes from one source, and that is God’s perfect sovereignty.

2012 Day 213 – Romans 7

Mercy, Protection

When I read verse 15 I am encouraged and depressed at the same time, I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. If Paul feels like he has trouble controlling the influence of sin in his life, what hope do I have? To top it all off, Paul goes on to say in verse 24, What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? If Paul had left it there I would be completely without hope. However, Paul does give us hope by concluding the chapter with verse 25, Thanks be to God–through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Because of God, through Jesus Christ, we are free from the power of sin. This doesn’t mean we won’t sin, it just means we don’t need to let it control us. In yesterday’s post, my friend Brian made a great comment. In essence, he made the observation that we must seek out our Master daily so we can know His desires for our lives. The daily renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2) is what frees us from the control of sin in our lives.

2012 Day 211 – Romans 5

Grace, Mercy

Romans 5 is all about the story of redemption. From verses 1-11, Paul talks about how we are justified through Christ’s blood. In verses 5-8 Paul explains how unwilling most of us would be to die for a righteous man and how much less for an unrighteousness one. But Christ died for us, all of the unrighteous ones. No matter how good we think we are, we are simply not good enough and without Christ’s sacrifice we are unrighteous in the eyes of the only one that matters; God, our father, the creator. In verse 11 Paul concludes by saying the words we all need to hear, Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. In God’s eyes we are reconciled. We are now righteous in His sight and that is all that matters. The world may see the sin and imperfection in our lives, but God our father sees us clean and worthy of being called righteous through Christ’s blood. While I don’t feel worth at times, I praise God for His mercy and grace.

Forgiveness, Grace, Mercy

In today’s reading, Paul uses David as an example of how God forgives and is able to continue to bless us. In verse 6 it says, David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: Paul goes on, in verses 7-8, to quote David’s words from Psalm 32:1-2, “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.” These words came from a man who lied, committed adultery, and murder and yet God allowed him to experience the joy of forgiveness. If we recognize, admit, and let go of our guilt and accept God’s forgiveness, we too can experience the joy God has promised us. Thank you God for forgiving me of all my sins and for covering my sins to the point where they are no longer counted against me. May I be as forgiving of others as God is of me.

2012 Day 203 – Psalm 77, 78

Grace, Mercy, Protection, Repentance

As I started to read Psalm 78 I thought I would not have much to say about the chapter because it was mostly a recounting of the history of the Israelites through David’s reign. However, as I read and noticed how many times the people rebelled and God forgave them, it reminded me of my life. No matter how bad things I do, God always forgives me when I repent and ask Him for His forgiveness. As we fast-forward to Christ, He solidified grace and forgiveness through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. It humbles and sometimes shames me to think how many times God has to forgive me. I need to be reminded daily that I need the Holy Spirit to help me and guide me through my life to stay away from my potentially sinful ways. God is merciful and full of grace, which makes me love Him all the more.

2012 Day 200 – 2 Corinthians 11

Grace, Mercy

There is not much to quote from in today’s reading. What I took away from Paul today is that he felt very much like a man with no home. He did everything for the glory of God and for the love of the people he served. We have so many comforts in modern times. It almost gives me guilt to think of how easy it is for me as a believer. I think the hardest part is remembering my salvation came from the sacrifices of men like Paul in the early church. I should never take it for granted that men died and were tortured so that I may experience God’s mercy and grace. I pray that my life is worthy of their sacrifices.

2012 Day 189 – Psalm 146, 147

Faith, Grace, Hope, Mercy

Psalm 146:2-3 is such a good reminder that our trust should never be in men (or women) but in God alone. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in mortal men, who cannot save. And if that’s not enough, verse 4 tells us why… When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing./strong> Men cannot help us. They are just like us; flawed, imperfect, and will return to dust just like us when they die. Only the creator of the universe can truly help and wants nothing more than to help us fully. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” – Revelation 1:8

2012 Day 160 – 1 Thessalonians 2

Mercy, Salvation

In verses 11-12 it’s says, For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to live lives that were worthy of God. This is a great example of how we should be an encouragement to those around us. We should be people who motivate and not tear down or destroy. We all have sin in our lives and we all come very, very short of where God wants us to be. We should constantly be reminded that God’s mercy and Christ’s sacrifice is what set us free and not the notion that we are any better than anyone else. The only thing that makes us different is our belief and acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice and nothing else.

2012 Day 155 – Psalm 126, 128

Grace, Mercy, Relationship, Salvation

God has the ability to restore anything, whether it’s a burned down forest, broken bones, or even broken hearts and relationships. He loves all things He has created. Psalm 126:5-6 says it best, 5 Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him. We may go out weeping for the pain we are in, but God never leaves us and always brings us healing. Even when my dad died of cancer a few years ago, God restored him to healing in eternity. I have to believe His promises to me. It is what keeps me moving forward.
