2016 Day 69 – Matthew 23

faithfulness, Justice, Mercy

In today’s reading we listen as Jesus condemns the religious leaders for their hypocrisy. Of all the things Jesus mentions, the passage that stood out to me most was Matthew 23:23, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices – mint, dill, cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law – justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” While we may feel good about giving our stuff (money, possessions, etc.) to the church and those in need, what we really need to concentrate on is reflecting Christ’s example from when He was here on earth. When we fail to do what is right by taking care of people and loving them, we fail at being who God calls each of us to be.

2016 Day 53 – Luke 15

Grace, Love, Mercy, Repentance

God asks us for nothing more than repentance. In the parable of the prodigal son, the father did not require anything of the son in order to welcome him home with open arms. In Luke 15:21 the lost son comes to his father, “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'” There was nothing more needed by the father, just like there is nothing needed of us for God to accept us just as we are. No where does it say we must become perfect for Him to accept us. Our change comes from our relationship with Him. Our obedience and love for God comes because He first loved us.

Grace, Love, Mercy

Whoever is sure they are righteous is not saved because we must acknowledge we don’t have all the answers and our need for Christ in our lives. In Matthew 9:13 Jesus says,  “But go ahead and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Jesus is quoting Hosea 6:6 when he says, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” Jesus doesn’t need our ritualistic sacrifice. What He wants is our recognition of our need for His mercy on us and our need to have mercy on others.

Mercy, Trust

How we may feel about our relationship with God, does not translate to the way God feels about our relationship with Him. In Psalm 31:22 even David shows surprise that God never stop listening to our cries for help even when we may not feel close to Him, In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. He will never stop listening for us.

Eternity, Grace, Mercy

Today we read about the beginning of Jesus’ ministry according to the Gospel of John. The beauty of Jesus coming to save of is the story each of us share as adopted Children of God. John 1:12 says, Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in  his name, he gave the right to become children of God. As adopted children we all share the same benefits. We are God’s children and we all receive the same inheritance of eternal life with Him.

We are all sinners and just like people who struggle with addiction, the first step in recovery is to admit we have a problem. 1 John 1:8 says, If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. There is no greater deception than the deception we believe about ourselves. When we believe we are justified in sin, we not only lie to God, but we lie to ourselves. Once we realize how much we need God’s grace and mercy, we can then see how broken we are without the love of God, and this is when we begin to heal.

Mercy

When someone wrongs us, our first instinct is to pay them back. But in 1 Peter 3:9 Peter calls us to react differently, Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. Just as Jesus commanded us to turn the other cheek, and He lived and died by this example, we are not to repay evil with evil. It is God’s job to judge and repay evil against us.

Grace, Mercy, Obedience

Having ill will or feelings for another person is never productive. In 1 Peter 2:1 Peter says, Therefore, rid yourself of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. When you hang onto these feelings, it does more to harm you than the person you are feeling it towards. More importantly, it is against what Jesus called us to do when He told us to love Him and to love others.

Mercy, Relationship

One of the hardest things in the world is to pray when you are angry, not to mention the fact that God is displeased with us when we are angry. In 1 Timothy 2:8 Paul’s words to Timothy are, I want men everywhere to lift up holy hands in prayer, without anger or disputing. Even Jesus said that we should interrupt our prayers to make peace with others in Matthew 5:23-24. The goal is to have a good relationship with Him and others.

2015 Day 204 – Philemon

Fellowship, Forgiveness, Mercy

In today’s reading we are in the short book of Philemon. This book is a letter Paul wrote while in prison to Philemon, who was probably a wealthy member of the Colossian church. The purpose of the letter was to try to convince Philemon to forgive his runaway slave Onesimus. While Paul does not condemn slavery, which was very common in the Roman empire, he does make a radical statement in the beginning of Philemon 1:16 no longer a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother. Paul calls Onesimus Philemon’s dear brother. This is important to all of us. No matter who we are or where we stand in society, as believers we are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
