2015 Day 182 – Romans 6

Faith, Obedience, Salvation

In today’s reading we come across one of the most powerful verses in the Bible and a foundation of our faith: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are welcome to choose between a life of sin and the gift of God through Jesus Christ. While choosing Christ does not completely eliminate the sin from our life, it does eliminated the eternal consequences. Choosing to live a life of sin has only one wage; death. Without the acceptance of God’s gift to us through Christ, we are left with nothing but death. Choose life!

God’s grace, along with our acceptance of His grace, is sufficient. When we seek to serve Him in every way, we are blessed. We may not feel the blessing at times, but our reward is clear through the gift of eternal life. In Romans 2:6-8 Paul clearly states 6 God will give to each person according to what he has done. 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. Paul is clearly comparing the outcomes of the believer versus the non-believer. Those who believe and accept Christ’s gift of eternal life through His sacrifice will be blessed according to that grace. But those who choose to reject Christ, and in turn seek selfish endeavors, will be condemned.

2015 Day 175 – Acts 20

Grace, Obedience

The world’s definition of worth is different from God’s definition. In Acts 20:24 Paul says, However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given to me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. Being obedient to God’s calling on our lives and accomplishing the purpose for which we were created is all that matters. All else is of little to no significance.

Grace, Love, Mercy, Obedience, Relationship

As Paul closes this first letter to the Corinthian church in 1 Corinthians 16, it is important to remember why he wrote the letter in the first place. Corinth was a major cosmopolitan port city in Achaia. It was also filled with idolatry and immorality. Paul wrote the letter to help identify the issues in the church and to teach the believers how to live for Christ in such a corrupt society. While this book was specifically written to the Corinthian church, much of what Paul writes applies to us today. This world is getting worse and the life God wants from all of us seems to be less and less popular in our society today. I think one of the keys is to make sure we understand and live for our relationship with Christ. It does no good to become God and judge when all He really wants is for us is to love like God. Jesus made our job very clear in Mark  12:30-31, 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.”

Obedience, Relationship, Servant

At some point in our lives we must grow up. The same is true for our spiritual lives. In 1 Corinthians 14:20 Paul says, Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. Being like infants when it comes to evil means we should never allow ourselves to become good at it. We should mature in our relationship with God and in doing good and bringing glory to Him. If we focus on being servants for the Kingdom of God, then there will be less time and energy to do evil.

In today’s reading, Paul goes over a lot of things about public worship and the Lord’s Supper. But 1 Corinthians 11:31 is what stood out to me, But if we judge ourselves, we would not come under judgement. We must read scripture and listened to the Holy Spirit in order to properly judge ourselves. If we are honest in our interpretation of scripture and in our relationship with God, then we don’t have to wonder what is right versus wrong.

Glory, Obedience

Let’s not get hung up on what we do or don’t do, but instead do it all for God’s glory. In 1 Corinthians 10:31 Paul says, So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. When we use the following thought, “Is this action glorifying God?” as a guiding principle, our actions will speak for themselves and we don’t have to worry about our individual contribution.

Holy Spirit, Honor, Obedience

Our bodies were created to honor God and to be in a relationship with Him. When we accept Christ into our lives, the Holy Spirit lives in us. We are no longer our own, we are one with Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. 20 you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your body. We are not expected to be perfect, but we are expected to do all we can to honor God with our bodies in all we do. Just as a temple is holy, so are we supposed to be holy as a dwelling place for the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Obedience

Allowing sin to enter and stay in your lives is not a good thing. In 1 Corinthians 5:6 Paul says, Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? A little bit of yeast in a batch of dough goes a long way, just as a little bit of sin in our lives tends to work its way into more sin. While the expectation is not that we need to be sinless, we are supposed to fight deliberate sin in our lives.

Obedience, Relationship, Servant

Today we begin the first letter from Paul to the Corinthian church. The purpose of the letter was to identify issues in the church, propose solutions, and to teach believers how to live Christ-like lives in a corrupt and lost society. In the first few chapters, Paul takes the opportunity to address their problems and to offer truths about what we really are without a relationship with Christ. In the final verse of this chapter Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:31, Therefore it is written: “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” He chose us, not because we were great and had a lot to offer Him, but because He is able to use anyone and anything for His glory. We are to consider it a privilege to be identified as children of God and to be found worthy to be His servant.
