faithfulness, Obedience

God never promised us that our lives as believers would be easy or without hardship and suffering. And the reality is the more we serve God faithfully, the more we open ourselves up for more persecution and potential ridicule for our views and beliefs. The apostles counted it a blessing to be flogged for their faith in Acts 5:41, The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. May we all strive to be counted worthy for our faith and obedience to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

2015 Day 100 – Acts 4

Obedience, Relationship

Welcome to the 100th day of the year! I hope and pray God’s will is accomplished greatly through each of you.

In today’s reading we find Peter and John facing the religious leaders because they healed the crippled man in yesterday’s reading. The religious leaders, the same men who had Jesus crucified, are once again intimidated by the power of God through these faithful servants. The beauty of today’s reading comes from their obedience and learning from Jesus’ example of choosing to follow the Father versus “religion”. In Acts 4:19 we read, But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God.” In the end, obeying God may not be the most popular of choices, but Jesus does not want to be “popular”, He wants to be the individual choice in a personal and loving relationship with with each of us.

2015 Day 97 – Acts 1

Obedience, Servant

Today we begin the book of Acts, which was written by Luke. It is written as an account of the beginning’s of the Christian church. In this first chapter we see the ending of Jesus’ time with His apostles and the election of a new apostle, Matthias, to replace Judas. When Jesus died on the cross it left many to wonder if He really was the Messiah because their expectations were very different from what He accomplished with His time on earth. One of the final conversations we see with Jesus and the apostles was their asking when He would return. Jesus’ answer was simple in Acts 1:7, He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. Ultimately, for us, it is not important when Jesus comes back because our mission remains the same until His return; to love and serve others just as He would have done had He remained with us.

Obedience, Truth

As we approach Easter, we are now reading about the final moments of Jesus’ life here on earth. Jesus’ life and death have significance in all he accomplished. Even in His private conversation with Pilate, Jesus reflected the truth of who He was and all He had done. I found it interesting in the beginning of John 18:38 when Pilate says, “What is truth?” In the Roman government of that time (much like has become for us today) “truth” was whatever the majority of people agreed for it to be. When there is no basis for truth, there is no basis for moral right and wrong. Jesus’ words and actions are the basis for our standard of truth and our moral behavior.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

Sometimes silence is the best course of action even when we know the truth. In Mark 15:5 Jesus was the perfect example of this, But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. While Jesus knew the truth, He chose to remain silent, mostly because He did not need man’s approval or permission to carry out the will of the Father. We need to remember that God does not need my opinion, just my obedience.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

In Matthew 27:24, Pilate’s interaction with the crowd who wanted Jesus crucified stood out to me, When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!” Pilate knew the difference between doing what was right versus what was unmistakably wrong. Even though Pilate chose not to make a choice, he allowed an unjust choice to be made. When we are faced with a difficult decision, we cannot sit idly by and watch injustice happen. We must stand for what is right regardless of the consequences.

Obedience, Trust

No matter how out of control our lives may feel, God has it all under control. In John 14:1 Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me.” When we place our trust in God and our Lord and Savior Jesus, our path is secure. We are simply told to trust and obey.

Love, Obedience

I think many believers spend too much time worrying about Christ’s second coming. While I am not saying it’s not important, what I am trying to say is that it is more important to focus on reflecting Christ’s love for others more than warning them about condemnation. In Mark 13:33 Jesus is clear about what He feels is important, Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. Notice the emphasis on being on guard and alert. Some people think this means we should use all our energy looking for signs, but I believe Jesus is talking about focusing on being obedient to what God has called us to do; Love God and love others.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

We tend to have faith that is limited by what we think is possible. But with God all things are possible. Luke 18:27, Jesus replied, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” While God is not in the business of writing blank checks, He is capable of doing anything. We must have faith that He is capable of doing everything even if He does not will it. Trust, obedience, and faith are all part of the equation in our relationship with God.

Obedience, Trust

Sometimes it is the simplest things that make the most sense. Jesus’ plan is simple and yet it is hard to do because we want to make it something complex and difficult. Matthew 21:16 says, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise?” Jesus simply wants us to listen and obey to His guidance in our lives through the leading of the Holy Spirit. It’s that simple.
