Obedience, Reward

Control over our minds and bodies is one of the hardest things we can do. To master the will of our subconscious can sometimes feel impossible. However, we do it because we want to be in control. 1 Corinthians 9:26-17 says, 26 Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27 No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. Nothing we do should ever be done without meaning and purpose. God will bless us for our efforts. Training gives the athlete the ability to be compete in an event. The same goes for training our minds to look to God and Trust the Holy Spirit to lead us. It does not come naturally to us, so we must practice it each and every day.

God, Knowledge, Obedience, Relationship

Having good and foundational knowledge about the Bible is good, but it does not replace having a relationship with God and knowing Him in a personal way. 1 Corinthians 8:2-3 says, 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves God is known by God. The second part of this passage says there is something more important than us knowing God, and it is that God knows us. God loves us and wants to have a strong and meaningful relationship. What a privilege it is to be loved by God in this way. Let us never lose sight of that.

2014 Day 38 – 1 Thessalonians 4

Obedience, Salvation

The verse that best summarizes this chapter is 1 Thessalonians 4:7, For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. As a reflection of God, we must strive to be pure. Not because God requires it from us to be saved, but because it is right and good for us. Acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice is the only requirement for salvation, but God wants purity in our lives because He wants what is best for us. While some may see purity as prison, it is in fact freedom.

2014 Day 25 – Galatians 1

Obedience, Reward

Today we begin the book of Galatians. This book was written by Paul and is meant to refute teachings to the Galatian gentiles that they must follow Jewish law in order to be saved, calling all believers to faith and freedom in Christ. Galatians 1:10 says, Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ. Paul would not have gone through all he had if he simply wanted to please men. Life was easier when Paul lived for the approval of Jewish leaders and did not have to face their persecution. When we seek God’s approval we must be prepared to face the disapproval of man. We see it today even in the way other believer sometimes disapprove of each other. Our obedience to Christ is not meant to be understood by anyone else but Him. Our reward comes from God and not by the approval of men.

2014 Day 16 – Acts 14

Obedience, Trust

The apostles were not afraid to preach the gospel. They were so concerned about being obedient to God that they did not fear the consequences. They experienced every emotion from the people they spoke to; from thinking they were Gods, to stoning them and leaving them for dead. God never promised us an easy road with no curves, bumps, or hills. But He did promise to pick us up, dust us off, heal us if necessary, and continue to walk with us no matter what our circumstances. Trust and obey, that is all God really wants from us.

Faith, Forgiveness, Obedience, Trust

In Acts 10:47 Peter says, “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.” The important thing in my mind is that they received the Holy Spirit before they did anything good. The requirement for these people was not that they become better people before God would accept them. God accepted them first and then their lives were changed. We are foolish to think God needs our goodness. He is in the business of changing lives, not us. His only requirement is that we accept Him and accept His leading in our lives. Trust and obey; that is it.

Courage, Healing, Obedience

God never asked us to do anything specific in His name other than be obedient. For Peter, his obedience called for him to give all he had to the crippled man. In verse 6 it says, Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” While riches may provide means to serve God, the only thing He really asks of us is to trust in Him and give all He has provided us to give.

Obedience, Relationship

One of the things we must remember as we read the book of Acts is this is an example of how we should live as believers. I’m not necessarily saying we should sell all our possessions, but we should learn to focus on serving God more and focus less on serving our own interests. Life as a believer is simple; love others, serve them, and help bring them to a closer relationship with God. The rest is less important to God and simply makes us feel more important in the eyes of others.

2013 Day 362 – Revelation 21-22, Isaiah 66

Knowledge, Obedience, Trust, Wisdom

Today is our final reading for 2013 and it is also the completion of our read through the entire Bible. Revelation 21:6 is a great culmination of what we’ve read this year. He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. I am so thankful to everyone who participated in reading this year. It was a great accomplishment to read the entire Bible with you this year. Few have attempted this and even few have accomplished it.

Next year we will change things up and probably slow things down a bit. I will most likely combine last year’s process of reading the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs with this year’s reflection day each Sunday to allow us time to reflect on the previous week’s reading and give time to catch up if you fall behind.

My friend Sarah also suggested some topical readings which we can certainly combine into our plan if we are only reading one chapter instead of 4-5 chapters per day. I will post this year’s plan by December 31st. In the meantime, we will have reflection posts for the last three days of 2013. May you and your family have a blessed New Year!

Courage, Obedience

I drink water instead of sodas and sugary drinks all the time. I have actually learned to love it… when there is ice in it or when it’s hot in tea or coffee. However, there is nothing less satisfying that lukewarm water. The same applies for lukewarm believers according to Revelation 3:15-16, 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. Don’t settle for following God halfway and in name only. Allow God to penetrate your life and fire up your faith where He can fully use you.
