Obedience

Today we begin a rather lengthy time going through the book of Jeremiah. While this book is a bit tedious to read, it is one of the most important prophetic books of the Bible. The book was written during the reign of five different kings of Judah ranging from 627-586 BC – Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. The main purpose of the book was to urge God’s people to turn from their sin and back to God. The book is a mixture of history, poetry, and biography. As we read this book, we can almost feel how much Jeremiah agonizes over the message he must deliver. This is a reminder of how hard it is for us to deliver this type of message. However, when we are called by God to do it, we must.

Obedience

Today we are reading the entire book of Titus. This is a letter written by Paul to Titus partially as an encouragement, but mostly for instruction on his responsibilities as the supervisor of the churches on the island of Crete. Titus was probably a convert to Christ through Paul’s ministry. Paul shows great confidence in Titus in the key verse of the book, Titus 1:5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. This is mostly a book of instruction that all of us can learn from.

Grace, Obedience, Salvation, Trust

We finally come to the end of our reading in Job. God has taken the opportunity to reprimand everyone associated with this story including Job. Once God is finished with all He has to say, Job begins his repentant replay in Job 43:1-6, 1 Then Job replied to the Lord: 2 “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. 4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ 5 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. 6 Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” Once Job repented, God was able to bless him even more than He had before. This is not a promise that God has given to us, however our obedience should be unconditional to God. He loves us and has promised us salvation from eternal death, and that is the only thing that should ever matter to us. God’s love has saved us and we are to be obedient, loyal, and thankful because of it.

Faith, Love, Obedience

1 Timothy 6:10 is a verse used by people who think money is good and bad, For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. The reality is that money is neither good or bad. The desire to be rich is what leads people to sin, not the actual possession of wealth. However, there comes a time when money will himder us from stepping out in faith and allowing God to lead us and take care of us. Do not let the love of money be your guide, but let God lead you into using His blessings for the good of His kingdom.

Obedience, Power, Trust

Today we begin reading the book of 1 Timothy, which is a letter Paul wrote to Timothy as an encouragement for the struggles he faced serving the early Church. Timothy was young and struggled with a timid and reserved nature. He sometimes allowed others to look down on his youthfulness. Youthfulness should never be an excuse for ineffectiveness in the Church or anywhere else. Just as those who are older should not be given authority just because of their advanced age. All authority is given by God and our ability to serve Him comes from His power and given ability. None of us are perfect, but our inadequacies and inabilities should not keep us from being available to serve God in any way He directs. We should be thankful that we never stand alone and that He is always with us. Praise God for His constant presence in our lives.

Obedience, Trust

Nehemiah is a really interesting book. Nehemiah is faithful to follow God’s commands and in the end God blesses his life. No matter how hard a task may seem, remember God is always with us. He loves us and has a perfect plan for our lives. We just need to trust and obey.

Obedience, Righteousness

Nehemiah arrives in Jerusalem prepared to find a broken wall that needs fixing. He also finds broken lives that need to repentance and a return to righteous living. With the help of Ezra, who read God’s law, the people repent and promise to change their lives by obeying God’s word. No matter where we are, we are always at risk of falling away from living a righteous and godly life. We must constantly check our behavior against the standards God has placed in the Bible. If we are faithful to follow God’s word, we will be less likely to suffer from the consequences of sin in our lives because it is meant for our protection.

Obedience

Today we finished up our reading through 2 Chronicles. After continued disobedience by the Israelites, God finally allowed the Israelites to be placed in captivity by the Babylonians. Everything they had and held sacred was taken from them. This is a lesson to us all. God does not inflict harm on us out of spite. But there comes a time when God allows the consequences of our sin to take over. We must be mindful of the consequences of our sin and turn away and look to God before it catches up to us. It is never easy, but it is what we must do.

Obedience, Relationship

As we read the history of Israel and Judah, it is always difficult to read about all the ups and downs they go through. There are some kings that serve the Lord, but then there are others who choose to live for their own glory. We must always choose to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to God and for His glory. When we follow God and live our lives to serve Him, He is able to guide us. But there are always consequences to living our lives for ourselves instead of serving God. Let us all work to serve God in all we do.

Forgiveness, Grace, Obedience, Relationship, Wisdom

We have talked before about the significance of seemingly minor decisions having a major impact in future events. Today, we read once again about a minor issue in the life of Solomon that would later have a major impact on his life. I am talking about his wife, Pharaoh’s daughter. While on the surface this may not register as an issue, the reality is that her presence in Solomon’s life would eventually cause him to turn away from God. Pharaoh’s daughter was not the only catalyst, but it was one of the circumstances that caused Solomon to be lost for a portion of his life. Through God’s grace he would eventually turn his life around, but not before it made a significant impact on his life. The lesson for us is to be aware of seemingly innocent decisions we make and understand the potential impact it can have on our lives. We must always have our eyes fixed on our relationship with God and allow Him and the Holy Spirit to guide us in every decision we make. He will never steer us in the wrong direction.
