Obedience, Protection

I always admire Paul’s boldness when it comes to his willingness to serve Christ at any cost. Verse 13 shows that even though he was warned by the prophet Agabus, he would not be dissuaded from going to Jerusalem, Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Some may look at Paul’s actions as reckless, but the reality is that Paul was willing to lay down his life to reach people with the Gospel of Christ. There are days I won’t even risk my reputation, much less my life. I hope and pray I’d have the courage of Paul if God ever called me to stand up for Him in the same way.

Faith, Obedience

It is good to have a healthy self-worth. We should never think of ourselves as being less than what God has created us to be. At the same time, it is important to take an accurate assessment of ourselves and know that our identity comes from our relationship with God. Verse 3 says, For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. We are only as good as the measure of faith we have in God. We can never have true success without the Father. We may be successful in the eyes of the world, but our true measure comes from how we compare in the light of eternity.

Obedience

We are to be a true reflection of Christ. In verse 15 Paul talks about being the aroma of Christ, For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. We should be the sweet aroma of Christ, not the stench of what He is not. It really does matter how we reflect what Christ has done for us and how He works through us.

Faith, Obedience

It wasn’t until recently that communion became more than a ritual to me. Growing up in a conservative church we were very careful to keep communion very sterile and plain and to keep it as a remembrance of Christ only. The problem was that it was barely a remembrance to me. It was just something we did every three months. When I read verses 23-26 I see that communion is not something to help us remember Christ, it is meant to recognize that He died for our sins, that His death brings us life, and that He is coming once again. As I read this passage I want be reminded that the eating of the bread and drinking of the wine means more than a simple ritual, I want it to remind me of where my purpose comes from. 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Obedience, Relationship

Verse 13 stood out to me today, Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. While we are not under the law, we are part of a community of believers and we should be sensitive to those who are in a different place spiritually from us. For me, it is easy to say it is ok to have a glass of wine from time to time, but for someone else it may not be something they are willing to do for whatever reason. The important thing for me is to be willing to refrain from drinking a glass of wine for the spiritual benefit of a fellow believer. My relationship with God and helping others with their relationships is what really matters.

Obedience, Protection

Psalm 127 is a great reminder to me that nothing really matters if it is not centered around God. Verse 1 says, Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. Whatever I do outside of God’s protection and leading is done in vain.

Mercy, Obedience, Relationship

A few years ago I was struggling with what my relationship with God was supposed to be. I had a hard time believing that a perfect God could ever want to look at me, much less have a relationship with me. Then one day I decided to take the time and read the Bible cover to cover. Once I got through the tedious task of reading through books like Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, I was excited to read about amazing characters like Joshua, Saul, and David. But it wasn’t until I got to the stories of David, a man after God’s own heart, that I realized there really are no perfect men in the Bible. In fact, I realized God doesn’t even expect us to be perfect. Actually, He does expect perfection, but He knows we cannot attain it on our own. This is where David’s life spoke to me so powerfully. David, a man after God’s own heart, made mistakes… he made a lot of mistakes. Sometimes he made multiple mistakes in a single try (when he committed adultery with Bathsheba he committed murder in an attempt to cover it up). But what made David a man after God’s own heart was he realized he needed God to make him clean and presentable for His presence. Psalm 51:10 and 11 says, 10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Even David, a man after God’s own heart, wasn’t perfect and needed God to renew him and purify him. It was the first time in my life I realized that God doesn’t expect perfection. He expects obedience and a real relationship with Him that acknowledges our 100% reliance on Him. Yes, God is perfect, but He is also merciful and His plan is perfect!

Obedience

Paul and Barnabas experience a little bit of everything in today’s reading. At one point they are thought of as gods and the next Paul is almost stoned to death. Through it all they continue to drive down the road of obedience. It is usually easy for us to follow God when things are going right, but it’s not as easy when we see the locals with stones in their hands ready to throw it at our heads.

Obedience, Praise

There is not a lot to say about today’s Psalms, but I will make an observation about chapter 122. When David talks about Jerusalem’s prosperity, he is talking about it in conjunction with their obedience. One does not happen without the other.

Grace, Mercy, Obedience

There were a couple of things that stood out to me in today’s reading. The first was in Saul’s conversion when The Lord speaks to Ananias and says, 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” It is very clear that Jesus is fully responsible for Paul’s conversion, but what I found interesting is that even though Paul is completely turned around, he is still going to suffer according to these verses (we see this throughout the rest of Paul’s life) Let none of us ever think that a life of following Jesus is going to be like a bed of roses, in reality, it is more like a bed of rose bushes. There is certainly beauty in it and a sense of pure joy as we cultivate our walk with Him, but there is also suffering to be felt in order to attain it. The older I get, the more I realize that pain is a part of living a fulfilled life. The U.S. Marine Corps has an amazing saying, “Pain is just weakness leaving the body” For us it can be said, Suffering is just obedience entering our souls.

The second thing that stood out to me today was Peter’s raising Tabitha from the dead in verse 40, Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. Yes, this is the same Peter who denied Jesus three times. God can use any of us for great things if we just allow Him to use us. No matter how bad We have made mistakes, Jesus’ mercy and grace is much more powerful than our sin. Jesus conquered sin once and for all and our past or present sins do not limit His ability to use us.
