2016 Day 292 – Proverbs 23

Eternity, Obedience

We can spend all our time and energy chasing down riches, but in the end we will have done nothing but pursued something we cannot take with us into eternity. Proverbs 23:5 says: Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. The hard thing about riches is we can never have enough. The more we have, the more we want. It is a vicious cycle. Let us spend out time and energy working towards the things that impact our lives eternally. They may be more difficult to attain, but will have everlasting consequences and bring glory to God.

Obedience, Reward

Diligence is not something that comes naturally to anyone, it is a result of deliberate development of a strong character. Proverbs 21:5 says: The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. By working hard with methodical patience, we can profit from it; just as the opposite will lead to poverty. Those who wait around for everything to just fall in their laps will be sadly disappointed when nothing happens.

Obedience

In today’s society we are so afraid to correct and discipline our children out of fear that we may break them down. Proverbs 13:24 refutes this thought: He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. This verse doesn’t imply we should beat our children, instead it says we should not be afraid to correct them. They are not as fragile as we think and disciplining children creates disciplined adults who are not intimidated by failure.

Obedience, Wisdom

God’s wisdom is greater than anything we can receive elsewhere. We must pay attention and stay away from the things that hurt or displease God. Proverbs 6:16-19 clearly states: 16 There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. Wisdom is taking knowledge and information learned and through wisdom applying it in our lives. The Bible is clear, it is up to us to apply through wisdom that can only come from God.

Love, Obedience

God’s main concern is that we love one another the way He loves us. 2 John 1:6 says:  And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. If we are obedient to the Father, then we will love others. Everything we do should be in love as a reflection of His love for us.

Obedience

If we are not willing to act like one of God’s children then we must question whether we really are one of His children. 1 John 2:4 says, The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. Obedience is the reflection of who we are in Christ.

Obedience, Trust

As we finish this second letter from Paul to Timothy, Paul gives some final instructions starting with 2 Timothy 4:2: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage – with great patience and careful instruction. Paul tells Timothy to “correct, rebuke, and encourage”. All three of these things are difficult to do, but if we want to grow closer to the Lord, we must be willing to do all three.

Faith, Obedience, Servant, Trust

Our faith in God should be reflected in the way we defend our faith to others. If we resort to arguments and scoring points, then we lack faith that God is working through us. In 2 Timothy 2:24 Paul warns: And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. There is no reason to quarrel with people about our faith. We know the truth and the truth will be revealed to others when it is God’s will and for His glory. It is not an attack on us when people reject Christ. We are simply an instrument willing to be used by God.

Faith, Obedience, Trust

In today’s reading, Paul reminds us of the “great cloud of witnesses”, which are those who have come before us and paved the way of obedience. Hebrews 12:1 says: Therefore since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. The men and women listed in Hebrews 11 were faithful because they were able to shed the things that held them back and/or pushed them away from their relationship with God. When we remove the distraction of this world, we are able to follow God’s will for our lives more easily. Let us remove the distractions and focus on God’s plan for our lives instead.

Obedience, Reward

Doing the right thing can sometimes feel very lonely. Paul says in Hebrews 6:10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. When we do the right thing, we always have an audience and when the audience is God, it’s the only one we need.
