2016 Day 190 – Romans 13

Hope, Peace

After all that has happened in the last few days in Baton Rouge, Minnesota, and Dallas, I found Romans 13:12 very comforting: The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. If we are to survive as a society, we must choose to stay away from the deeds of darkness and have hope in the light that can only come from God.

2016 Day 156 – 1 Corinthians 14

Obedience, Peace

As Paul spoke about the order of speaking in tongues and prophesy, we come across 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of disorder but of peace. This is very important to remember, not just in worship and in the use of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but also in life as a believer. If we feel there is chaos around us, it is not from God. He is a God of peace. Chaos comes from disobedience and disorder, not from God who wants peace for us all.

2016 Day 135 – 1 Thessalonians 5

Joy, Peace, Thankful

The circumstances of our lives should never dictate our joy. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Paul says, 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. If we are able to obey these three things, we begin to see people around us and the circumstances of our lives in a whole new light. Additionally, when we live life according to God’s plan for our lives, we will find it much easier to be joyful and thankful for all we have.

2016 Day 103 – Acts 6

Faith, Peace, Trust

In today’s reading we are introduced to Stephen who was one of the seven chosen by the Apostles to supervise the distribution of food to the needy in the early church. Because Stephen was so filled with the Spirit, the religious leaders seized him under false accusations. Acts 6:15 describes what the Sanhedrin saw when Stephen came before them, All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of and angel. Stephen was filled with the Spirit because of his great faith. He had peace in knowing he was doing the work God had laid out for him. When we know we are in God’s will, we feel peace and have confidence we are where we need to be.

2016 Day 95 – John 20

Joy, Love, Peace

I cannot wait to feel the joy of seeing Jesus face to face for the first time. When Mary Magdalene saw Jesus for the first time after His resurrection is probably a good glimpse of what it will be like for us. John 20:15 paints the picture, Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means teacher). When I read the part where Jesus calls Mary’s name, I try to replace her name with mine on the day I see Him for the first time face to face.

Obedience, Peace

In most of today’s reading we listen to what Jesus says about His second coming. Even after 2,000 years we are still waiting. But even after all this time, Jesus’ words are still true; we should not dwell or be anxious about any outcomes. In Luke 21:34 Jesus says, “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like a trap.” We know Christ is coming again, but we should not be obsessed to the point where we lose perspective on the wok He has called us to do. Don’t let life’s worries overburden you and cause you to lose focus.

Faith, Peace, Trust

When we truly follow Jesus most people will not understand; even believers around you. In the beginning of Mark 5:40 it says, But they laughed at him… These are the same people who had hope and faith when the child was alive, but when the child stopped breathing they believed it was now impossible for Jesus to heal. However, just a few verses earlier, Jesus commanded Jairus at the end of Mark 5:36, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” That command to Jairus did not change when the circumstances changed. The same goes for us. Jesus commands us to “just believe” no matter what our circumstances. It is never too big or too small and it is never based on what we think is possible; all things are possible through Him.

Peace, Protection

When we lift our eyes to the Lord in prayer, we can rest assured we are in the safety of Gods hands. David writes in Psalm 28:2, Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place. We know we are reaching the Most High when we pray to God. There is no where else higher we could possibly go.

2015 Day 357 – Matthew 1

Faith, Peace, Trust

This is one of the most telling chapters in the entire Bible confirming the true identity of Christ as the Messiah. When you look at the genealogy of Christ you see it. Matthew 1:17 says, Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. While this is not the only proof (and there are many), it is one of the most interesting and special parts of the story. It paints a clear picture of God’s perfect plan. When we think our lives make no sense, remember God’s plan is always perfect and we are a part of that plan.

Joy, Peace

In today’s reading, David makes it clear he knows where his joy and stability come from. In Psalm 16:2 he says, I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” All that is good in my life, like David’s, comes from God. Whether it is my marriage, my kids, or my friendships; if it does not come from God, it will not give me the joy and peace I need for true contentment.
