2014 Day 129 – Titus 2

Power, Protection

In today’s reading, Paul continues his encouragement and teaching of Titus. One of the key verses in this chapter is verse 15, These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. Paul is telling Titus it doesn’t matter who he is because his authority does not come from himself. He has all the authority as a believer through the Holy Spirit. If people want to despise us for our beliefs, they are not despising us, but God Himself. Our authority and our value comes from Him.

2014 Day 120 – Philippians 4

Love, Power, Protection

We all have worries about something. Whether it’s about our family, job, or friends, we all have worries in our lives. In Philippians 4:6 Paul says, Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. We must turn our worries into prayers and are thankful to God for His presence in our lives. The beauty of the life of a believer is we are never alone to face anything on our own. God is always with us and never allows us to stand in the face of our struggles without His powerful and loving presence in our lives.

2014 Day 115 – Ephesians 6

Holy Spirit, Power, Protection

The life of the believer can sometimes feel like a battle. And just like any battle, we must be equipped to fight and defend ourselves. Ephesians 6:14-17 describes this as The Armor of God, 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. While this list may seem like items we must provide for ourselves, it is critical to realize all armor comes from God through the power of the Holy Spirit. One of my biggest struggles in life is finding peace. The harder I try to attain peace, the more it eludes me because my peace cannot come from me, it can only come from God. When I let go and give God control and the ability to arm me for battle, I am able to face any struggle in my imperfect existence with His perfect power.

2014 Day 81 – Romans 2

Power, Righteousness

People are not condemned for what they don’t know, but for what they do with what they know. Romans 2:13 says, For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. While we are all saved from our imperfection through Christ’s sacrifice, it does not change right from wrong. We are still called to live a righteous life, but we are not supposed to do it apart from God. Our righteousness comes from His power in our lives, not from us “trying harder”. Strength and ability to live righteous lives comes only from God living and working in and through us.

Forgiveness, Power, Righteousness

Perfection is something that can only be attained in the eyes of God through our acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice for our sins. The process is twofold; turning away from our sin and turning towards God. 2 Corinthians 7:1 says, Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. God doesn’t expect us to be perfect through our own efforts, but He does expect us to look to Him for our righteousness.

Grace, Mercy, Power

I have read 2 Corinthians 4:7 many times, 7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. God’s valuable and powerful message of grace and mercy has been entrusted to frail and fallible human beings. As the notes in my Bible put it, “Paul was not focused on the perishable container, but on it’s priceless contents – God’s power dwelling in us.” Though we are weak, God uses us and gives us power to do His work. Knowing where our power really comes from should motivate us to stay away from pride and stay in constant contact with God who is the source of our power.

Glory, Power

God expects us to be bold. He also expects us to have confidence. Not confidence in ourselves, but confidence in the power and fulfillment that can only come from Him. 2 Corinthians 3:4-5 says, 4 Such confidence we have through Christ before God. 5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. Paul was not boasting, but gave all the credit to God for everything that had been accomplished in his ministry. When we boast about ourselves and forget about how much God blesses us, we take away the glory God deserves and take it for ourselves.

Power

Most people are pretty good at talking a good game, but few are actually good at producing results. In 1 Corinthians 4:20 Paul says, For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. There is a difference between knowing all the right words to say and actually living them out. Paul is saying that the kingdom of God is to be lived throughout our lives, not just discussed. Let none of us be content with only knowledge, but let us desire that God’s power really work in and through us.

Foundation, Power

Just like a building is only as strong as it’s foundation, so is the foundation of our lives. If we build a foundation on Christ, He will be our base and give us a reason for being that is rewarding and fulfilling and everlasting. In 1 Corinthians 3:11 Paul says, For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. Any other foundation that we build our lives on will eventually fail. Trust in God and know that your foundation built on Him will last for eternity.

Power, Strength

1 Corinthians 1:25 says so much about God, For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Not that God is weak or foolish, but the point is that He is much stronger than we could ever be. If He had a weakness it would still be stronger than our strongest strength (say that three times fast).
