2013 Day 6 – Genesis 15-17, Psalm 6

Faith, Power, Trust

In addition to all the drama between Sarai and Hagar, the big thing that stood out to me today was in Genesis 15:5, He took him outside and said, “Look up at the heavens and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Many years ago, as I was driving through the state of Texas in the middle of the night, I pull over and stepped outside to gaze up at the stars. Until you have viewed the stars with no light pollution to impair your view, you have not really seen what Abraham was seeing. That night I was able to see the actual form of our Milky Way galaxy, with billions of stars before my eyes. Think about the time of Abraham when there were no city lights to impair his view of the stars. This gave me a much greater appreciation for the picture God had painted for Abraham. When God gives us promises it is important for us to realize His promises from His vantage point. It is easy to see through our limited eyes. We have to step outside the things that impair our sight to see through the eyes of God what He is capable of producing in our lives.

2012 Day 355 – Revelation 21

Power, Salvation, Trust

Today the passage that stood out to me was verse 6, He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.” The notes in my Bible says it best: Just as God finished creation and Jesus finished the work of redemption, so the Trinity will finish the entire plan of salvation by inviting the redeemed into the new creation. It seems almost impossible, but with God we know all things are possible and He will make it all happen one day.

Power

We should never be surprised by God’s victories. The enemy is constantly making war against God, but in the end, He will have victory of all of it. Verse 14 says, “They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings–and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” He is victorious because He is Lord of lords and King of kings. Never lose sight of the perfect power and plan of God.

2012 Day 333 – Revelation 1

Power, Protection

So, today we begin the book of Revelation. I have to admit, while I find the book fascinating, I find it difficult to read and meditate on. Over the next several days, as we go through this book, my approach will mostly be an attempt to pull nuggets out of each day’s reading as opposed to broad sweeping prophetic interpretation. If anyone would like to comment on the prophecy being presented, please feel free to do so, but I will most likely keep it pretty simple.

In today’s reading, verse 8 was the major verse that stood out to me, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” There is great comfort (and maybe a little brain discomfort) in knowing that God has always been and always will be. God has been the ruler of the universe before our human history started and will continue to be the ruler into eternity. The fears and concerns over my future are temporary, knowing in the end God will continue to be in control.

Power

There is not a lot I have to say about today’s reading. The verse that stood out to me the most was Psalm 7:17, I will give thanks to the Lord because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. No matter how much things may seem out of control, God is still on the throne and has it all under control because He is the Lord Most High.

Power, Praise

The Jews back in the day had a lot of reverence for Moses. They almost treated him like a deity. But God is the one who made Moses and gave him the ability to be the person that he became. We must be very careful to not do the same thing when it comes to our spiritual leaders. In verse 3 it says, Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. Jesus, being God, should always deserve all the credit. We as humans are simply instruments to be used by Him for the building of His kingdom.

Power, Protection

In today’s reading, the second half of verse 17 and all of 18 spoke to me, And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. God’s love is total. It is wide enough to cover the breadth of all our experiences. It is long enough to cover the entirety of our lives. It is high enough to reach above any elation we could ever experience without Him. And finally, it is deep enough to cover despair, discouragement, and even death we will experience at the end of our lives. No matter what happens to us, we will never be lost to God’s love.

Power, Servant, Spirit

There is so much information in this chapter about how we should live the Christian life, but when I got to verse 12, I looked at it as if it were a checklist for my life. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. When I am around other people, regardless of who they are, do I show them compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, or patience? I hate to admit it, but I fail at these things more often than I’d like to admit and, based on Sarah’s comments on yesterday’s reading, it’s not a matter of me needing to just do it, I have to ask myself “why”? Why don’t I do the things that I know I need to do? The answer for me is simple… While Christ lives in me, I do not allow Him to be a greater influence on me than my own desires. In John 3:30, John the Baptist himself said, He must become greater; I must become less. I am no John the Baptist, which means, how much greater must Christ be in me for me to live the life He intended?

Power

After spending a couple weeks in Proverbs, we will spend the next four days in the book of Colossians. From what I’ve gathered in a couple of different notes, this letter was probably written during Paul’s first imprisonment in Rome and is written as a commentary on information he received about the state of the church at Colossae. There is a lot of great information in this book, but the verse that stood out to me the most talks about how nothing comes as a surprise to God. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. God is in control, we must never forget that. Nothing is a shock to Him.

Power

Sorry I am so late in posting this today. I don’t have many thoughts from today’s reading. The verse that stood out to me was Psalm 99:2, Great is the Lord in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. No matter how bad our government seems to be, God is still on His throne and is still in control.
