2015 Day 115 – James 3

Praise

It is easy to criticize people who do things we don’t agree with. James explains in James 3:9-10 how wrong it is to criticize with the same mouth that is supposed to encourage others and provide praise to God, 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. James clearly states how wrong it is to use your mouth to criticize, when we should be using it to praise our Lord and Father. If we are so busy praising God, we will not have time to find fault in others.

Hope, Peace, Praise, Trust

This is such a beautiful rendition by Jimmy Needham of the song It is well with my soul, which was originally written by Horatio Spafford in 1873 in response to the loss of his four daughters and nearly losing his wife in a ship accident on their way to England. John Piper describes the story beautifully in the middle of the song.

Glory, Honor, Praise

We worry too much about praise from other men and women instead of doing the things that bring honor and glory to God. Jesus points out the same thing out about the Pharisees in John 5:44, “How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?” God is the only measurement that really matters. If we waste our time looking for praise from anyone other than God, we are accomplishing nothing.

Praise, Trust

God’s love is greater than anything we could ever experience. Love from another human being pales in comparison to the great love He has for us. Psalm 118:1 says, Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. We must always remember to be thankful for the love He has and the fact that His love will never end. God wants nothing but what is best for us. Even when things are at their worst, His plan is perfect.

Obedience, Praise

Actively seeking God and looking to do His will allows us to be in a place where God can bless us. Psalm 40:16 says, But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation always say, “The Lord be exalted!” By always seeking God we exalt Him and place Him above all else. He deserves our praise, obedience, and respect.

Praise

The verse that stood out to me today is Revelation 5:12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” We could never praise Jesus enough for all He is. We simply scratch the surface when we try because He is worth so much more that we could ever give. It is why He is sufficient for us.

Praise, Trust

Today’s chapter can be summed up by the last verse, Revelation 4:11, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” In the end, all creatures in heaven and earth will praise God because he is the creator and sustainer of everything.

God, Praise

In the final verse of today’s chapter, Paul says in Romans 11:36, For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. We are all fully dependent on God whether we like to admit it or not. When we feel as though we have it under control, it is really under His control. God is the sustainer and the power that rules over this world for His glory and he deserves our praise.

2014 Day 74 – 2 Corinthians 10

Praise, Truth

Confidence in the truth is a beautiful thing because God has given us the confidence in knowing the truth. However, we should never be boastful. 2 Corinthians 10:17 says, But, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.” How much better is it to seek praise from God rather than men and women. Ultimately, God deserves all the credit. It is so much sweeter to receive praise from God than from other people. He is the authority and He is the only one we should try to please.
