Protection, Temptation, Wisdom

While it is important to clear our lives of the bad things, it is important to fill it with a strong and obedient life with God. In Matthew 12:43-45 Jesus says, 43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” If we simply remove the bad, we are inviting something to fill the void. We must be deliberate about what we allow to enter into our hearts and minds. Even the smallest of things can become some of the most difficult things to remove from our lives. For this reason, we must guard our lives with the power of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in all we do.

2013 Day 76 – Numbers 34-36, Psalm 37:23-40

Protection

We finally made it through the Book of Numbers! While it was tedious at times, there was plenty of great information and even some drama and action. Ultimately, the book of Numbers is about provision. Throughout the book, God ensures His people are taken care of; they are fed, protected, and are prepared to take possession of their promised land. The lesson from this book is that God is more concerned with us than we are of ourselves. The moment we realize how much He wants to do what is best for us, the better off we will be. The book of Numbers, along with the rest of the Bible, should remind us of God’s perfect plan for our lives.

2013 Day 73 – John Piper – Why Memorize Scripture?

Knowledge, Power, Protection, Relationship

Today I want to share a short video with John Piper talking about a topic that hits very close to home in convicting me. While I have become very proficient over these last few years at spending time in God’s word every day, I am not good at memorizing His word. This video is a great reminder of why we should be memorizing scripture. I hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

2013 Day 72 – Numbers 25-27, Psalms 35

Protection

In Psalm 35 you can hear David’s cry for vindication. He is begging God to step in and help him to punish his enemies. This can be very confusing to think it is ok to ask these things of God, but the reality is God is the only one who can step in and judge and punish our enemies. It is never our place to do it. What surprised me was how freely God allowed David to make his petition for exacting revenge. I think this shows that anger is an acceptable emotion, but we must be careful to understand that vengeance is God’s right, not ours.

2013 Day 67 – Numbers 8-10, Psalm 30

Obedience, Protection, Trust

We are now approaching the Israelite’s first attempt to cross into the promised land. Though we know how this will turn out, it is important to see where the Israelites went wrong. Ultimately, it was not because they were afraid; fear is a normal human emotion. They failed because they didn’t trust in the creator of the universe. If we look at Numbers 10:35, Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, O Lord ! May your enemies be scattered; may your foes flee before you.” Moses knew God’s power and understood God needed to lead them in all they set out to do. This is a lesson to us all. We cannot expect to be victorious in all God has asked us to do if we don’t put God up in front of our lives. We must start by placing God in front of every step. This sounds impossible, but God never asked for perfection, He asked for obedience.

2013 Day 47 – Acts 16-18, Proverbs 12:1-14

Power, Protection

It almost feels like we are going too fast through Acts. There is so much information to absorb. The big thing that stood out to me was brought to my attention by one of the notes in my Bible regarding Acts 18:14-16:

Gallio, Proconsul of Achaia, made an important judicial decision for the spreading of the Gospel in the Roman empire. Judaism was a recognized religion under Roman law. As long as Christians were seen as part of Judaism, the court refused to hear cases brought against them. If they had claimed to be a new religion, they could easily have been outlawed by the government. In effect Gallio was saying, “I don’t understand all your terminology and finer points of theology. Handle the matter and don’t bother me.”

Because of Gallio’s decision, Christianity was able to grow under the radar for a little while longer. It wasn’t until later persecution increased that the early church had to be more cautious. It is important to understand our heritage as Christians to truly appreciate what God has done to get us here.

2013 Day 28 – Exodus 12-14, Psalm 23

What stood out to me in today’s reading was how much the passages in Exodus and Psalm 23 fit together. Whenever I read Psalm 23 I find it to be very calming. I figured the best thing to do is share the entirety of Psalm 23:

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

2013 Day 19 – Mark 1-3, Psalm 17

Compassion, Protection

Today we begin in the book of Mark. In this Gospel, Mark tells us dramatic and action packed stories that focus more on Christ’s activities rather than on His teachings. The main thing to pull from the book of Mark is the description of how Jesus lived His life and the perfect example of how we should live ours.

Today we also read Psalm 17. Verses 8-9 stood out to me, 8 Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings 9 from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me. I love the term apple of your eye which references a Hebrew idiom referring to the tiny reflection of yourself that you can see in other people’s pupils. David is literally asking God to keep his reflection in His eye. Once I broke down the original meaning of the phrase it made me think of how much I want my reflection to be in God’s eyes. The only way I can be reflected in His eye is for God to be looking straight at me. This gave me chills when I thought about the power of God constantly looking after me.

Protection, Trust

This morning as I read Proverbs 30:7-9, I was reminded of a video blog entry by Francis Chan from 2008. For the record, I do not necessarily agree with his entire notion about money, but it was a powerful thought that really challenged me. It made me think about how little I rely on God and how I need to trust in Him more than my own abilities. If you have time, watch the video and see if it at least challenges you to look differently at God’s provision for you in your life.

Protection, Wisdom

Sometimes we forget who we are talking to when we pray. I love Psalm 94:9-10, 9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? 10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches man lack knowledge? God, who created the universe, gets it. We need not worry about explaining it to Him because He already has it under control. Trust in God that His plan is perfect and He has our best in mind for us.
