2016 Day 182 – Romans 6

Grace, Protection, Salvation

The most beautiful thing about salvation is grace. Though we do not deserve to be forgiven of our sin, God gave it to us anyway. In Romans 6:14 it says we are not only forgiven of sin, it is no longer a master over us: For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. While we are by no means perfect, we have an ability to turn to the Holy Spirit for protection and guidance through the draw of this world. We must remember we do not stand alone. God is with us always.

Protection

We are to influence this world and not be influenced by it. In 1 Corinthians 15:33 Paul says, Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” We are called to be in this world doing the will of God. However, we should be aware this world has the ability to impact and change us. Do not be deceived into thinking you can not be changed. If you are not constantly being influenced by good things, the bad will find a way.

Encouragement, Love, Protection

While we have freedom in Christ, we still struggle with sin at times. Some people even struggle with lifelong addiction. And while our freedom in Christ may allow us to be free to do things that cause others to stumble, we should not do it out of love. In 1 Corinthians 8:13 Paul says, Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to fall. Protecting each other from sin is one of many ways we can love each other. While I may not struggle with a particular sin, I can protect my brothers and sisters by being mindful of how I can protect their hearts as well as mine.

Humility, Protection

When we let a “little” sin into our lives, it is the same as allowing a lot. In 1 Corinthians 5:6 Paul says, Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? There is no such things as a little sin. Sin is sin and it works its way into who we are. Let us be mindful of what and who we allow into our lives.

2016 Day 134 – 1 Thessalonians 4

Holy, Holy Spirit, Protection

Much like our current culture, morality in the Roman Empire was very low. Paul recognized that perfection is impossible, but striving to be holy is not. In 1 Thessalonians 4:7 Paul says, For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Allowing sin to run unabated in our lives leads to harsh consequences; physically, emotionally, and Spiritually. Only through trusting in God and leading of the Holy Spirit can we combat the desire for sin in our lives.

2016 Day 5 – Luke 4

Faith, Protection, Trust

In today’s reading we look at Luke’s account of Jesus being tempted by Satan for 40 days and nights while he fasted. At the end of this time, even though He was weak and hungry, Jesus rebuked the devil for trying to tempt Him. The most powerful verse for me is Luke 4:12, Jesus answered, “It says: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” Two things happened here: 1) Jesus exclaimed His true identity as God’s Holy Son. 2) Jesus put the devil in his place and showed His authority over all things, including the devil. When we face temptation or struggles around us, remember who is our authority and who has all control.

Peace, Protection

When we lift our eyes to the Lord in prayer, we can rest assured we are in the safety of Gods hands. David writes in Psalm 28:2, Hear my cry for mercy as I call to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your Most Holy Place. We know we are reaching the Most High when we pray to God. There is no where else higher we could possibly go.

Miracles were a part of Jesus’ life from the very beginning. It all started with the Magi coming from the East. How did these men know the Christ was born? Did they even know He was the Messiah? But they showed up anyway through miraculous guidance. Then Herod wanted Jesus dead, but the Magi were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod in order to protect the future Savior of the World. Then Joseph was warned to take his family to Egypt to further protect Jesus from death. God protected the Messiah in miraculous ways and He did it for our benefit. Not just for the obvious reason of protecting our Savior, but also so we would know God’s hand was in it from the beginning. God loves us so much He is willing to move mountains on our behalf. Providing a way to eternal salvation was just the beginning.

Protection, Trust

David wrote Psalm 17 while he was be persecuted by Saul. You can feel the desperation as he reaches out to God for deliverance. In Psalm 17:6 David says, I call on  you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer. One way or another, David would be delivered; even in death. In the end, we all know God delivered David from Saul’s persecution.  But David trusted in God for His will to be done. This is a powerful example to all of us.

Protection

In today’s reading David describes a wicked world. In many ways he is describing the same world we live in today. But there is hope. In Psalm 12:7 he says, O Lord, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever. God will always protect us and keep us safe from the wicked, just like he kept David safe over 3,000 years ago.
