2015 Day 39 – Why Dads Lie

Protection, Reflection

I came across this video earlier this week. In the beginning I couldn’t quite tell which direction the video was going, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of why I do the things I do as a father to protect my kids. And while “lying” to my kids is wrong, I do think it’s important to shield them from the realities of this world and allow them to grow into maturity at a safe pace. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

2015 Day 5 – Luke 4

Protection

When He was being tempted by the devil, I thought it was interesting how Jesus was offered authority over the kingdoms of the world by the devil. As God’s son, you would think Jesus already had authority over the world. The truth is God has authority over everything, but the devil is given free reign to do what he wants. In this case, Jesus chose to not even acknowledge the devil’s role or abilities. By this example, we are to do the same. Satan only has control over us when we allow him to have that control. Jesus is our Lord and the Holy Spirit lives in us, which takes away any room for the devil to live in us. If we don’t give him room, he cannot take up residence in us.

2014 Day 359 – John 19

Authority, Power, Protection

Jesus showed boldness and authority even knowing His life was coming to an end. When Pilate asked Jesus if He knew how much authority he had, this was Jesus’ reply in John 19:11, Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” While earthly men may have had power over Jesus’ human body, they did not have control over His authority given to Him by His Father. When life takes us to a point where we feel out of control, we must remember that nothing Has authority over our Creator and Heavenly Father.

Jesus, Peace, Protection

God knows the life we lead on this earth is not easy. But we can still have peace because we know His ultimate purpose. In John 16:33 Jesus tells His disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Jesus does not abandon us to our struggles no matter how alone we may feel. Our peace does not come from an easy existence, but from a life with Jesus in our lives.

Protection

Jesus did not come to this earth to do battle, but He knew that sometimes protection would be necessary to ensure the gospel could be spread. Luke 22: 36, He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.” In this passage Jesus reversed His previous instructions for going out because He knew the extent of persecution they would face.

2014 Day 309 – Mark 9

Love, Obedience, Protection, Servant

Back in Jesus’ time, children were often treated as second class citizens. But Jesus used children as an example of service and love to those who needed our help the most. Mark 9:36-37, 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him by the arm, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Jesus’ point was to show that our service to others is a reflection of Christ’s love and service to them. While children can be challenging at times to deal with, they are the ones who benefit from Christ’s love the most by helping them form into who God created them to be.

Power, Protection, Trust

Mark 2:17 always stands out to me when I read it, On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners. God has not called us to be in community only with other believers. While we do not want to be negatively influenced, we must always strive to be influencers on others in an effort to positively impact this world. God gives us strength and protection if we follow and trust in Him. But if we try to do it alone, we will ultimately fail without the power of His protection.

Holy Spirit, Protection

The first part of Mathew 4 shows how smart and crafty the “tempter” is. Jesus being the son of God was able to fight off the temptation, but unlike Jesus, we are not perfect. We require the help of the Holy Spirit to fight. When we face temptation and we try to fight it on our own, we act like fools. We are never alone and we should always act by trusting in the Holy Spirit to help guide and protect us.

Hope, Protection, Temptation

For today’s reading, I found it interesting and surprising to see Jesus being tempted by Satan. We have to assume the devil knew Jesus was the Son of God, but somehow believed he could convince Jesus to give into temptation due to His weakened human physical condition caused by fasting and praying for 40 days. Ultimately I believe Jesus allowed Himself to be tempted as an example for us. Temptation is around us every moment of every day and we are faced with the choice to either fight temptation on our own or look to the one who knows exactly what we are experiencing each day. God never leave us alone to face our struggles, but we must look to Him to find the strength we need to conquer them.

Protection, rest

God is not limited by our geographic location or my our spiritual maturity; He is always with us and in him alone do we find protection and rest. Psalm 62:1 says, My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. No matter where we are or what we are feeling, God never abandons us.
