Compassion, Peace, Protection

In today’s reading, Job’s friends once again assume his suffering comes from sin in his life. It’s a common assumption we have all probably made, however we must always remember what our role should be in the lives of our friends, especially in their suffering. We must also remember that our friends are not where we should find comfort when we suffer. In our reading today in Psalm 121:1-2 says, 1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. Our help and comfort can only come from the Lord. Only God can bring stability and peace in difficult times because He is the only one who truly understands what we are going through and has the power to either walk us through it or fix it.

2013 Day 250 – Dr. E.V. Hill’s Wife’s Funeral Part 1

Protection, Trust

Dr. E.V. Hill was the preacher of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist in Los Angeles, CA for almost 42 years. In 1987, after his wife’s prolonged illness, he was given the difficult task of delivering a eulogy for his wife’s funeral. Below are the two videos that make up the sermon he preached. It is one of the most powerful sermons I have ever heard. It talks of trusting God when we don’t understand His will. Three years ago I gave my father’s eulogy and I know how hard it must have been for Dr. Hill to get in front of his congregation and deliver this message. It must have been difficult, but it shows the trust he had in God to deliver him from one of the most difficult moments in his life.

2013 Day 234 – Ezra 1-4, Psalm 116

faithfulness, Protection

Today we begin the book of Ezra. The purpose of the book was to show God’s faithfulness in restoring His people back to their land. This book was written after the exile to Babylon. While the Israelites were still under Babylonian rule, they were ultimately allowed to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. God may allow bad things to happen, but He never forgets about us or leaves us to deal with our consequences on our own.

2013 Day 232 – 2 Corinthians 10-13, Psalm 115

burdens, Peace, Protection

Life is hard. Paul talks about all the pain and suffering he experienced as he worked to deliver the message of salvation. But Christ gave him comfort through His words in 2 Corinthians 12:9, But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. God’s grace is sufficient through His power to comfort us through any hardship, pain, and suffering we may experience. Peace is something we should strive for through Christ, but it is not always easy to attain. We have to let go and allow God to take the burdens away from us.

2013 Day 228 – Obadiah 1, Psalm 111

Protection

Today we read the book of Obadiah. There is not much know about the man Obadiah, but his name means “servant (or worshiper) of the Lord”. The book is written to show that God judges those who harm His people. In this case, it is the Edomites who have been harassing the Jews. This shows us that while God will judge those who harm us in His timing, He will judge. We must be patient and wait on God’s timing because His timing and plan are perfect.

Protection

After generations of poor leadership (with a few exceptions), God finally lets the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah fall to the Babylonians in these last few chapters of 2 Kings. God gave them plenty of opportunities to do the right thing, but in the end they chose to trust in things other than God. Our reading in Psalm 91:1 fits nicely with this theme where it says, He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. If the Israelites had followed these words they would not have experienced being conquered and exiled from their land. We would do well to listen to this Psalm as well. If we dwell in the protection of our God, we can rest in knowing He will always protect us.

Protection, Trust

In today’s reading the story of the floating axe head made me wonder why it was in there. When I checked the notes in my Bible it said it showed God’s care and provision for those who trust Him, even in seemingly insignificant events of everyday life. We tend to look to God only when we have big issues. Especially as Americans because we feel very self sufficient. We are pretty spoiled when most of the world has a hard time with supplying basic needs. At a minimum, we should thank God for giving us so much when we really deserve so little.

Obedience, Protection

Even though God granted Solomon his request for wisdom, in the end, Solomon failed to use his wisdom to make wise choices in guard his heart. This is actually one of the hardest things for us to do. We must look to God for wisdom and strength so that we can protect our hearts against evil influences. Had Solomon protected himself against having so many wives who did not have his same convictions and love for The Lord, his life probably would have ended under happier circumstances. More over, the sins of his life affected his children and generation to come after him.

Protection

While David was far from perfect, he spent his entire life trying to be someone who was worthy of being called a man after God’s own heart. Some people would think it is enough to be of good character and to have integrity to keep them from harm. The problem is neither of those things provide protection from the evil on this earth. The only thing it provides protection against is from having a bad relationship with God. This is the most important thing we could work towards anyway. Just be mindful that God cares more about our well being than we can imagine; He is there for us even in death.

Holy Spirit, Protection, Temptation, Wisdom

In today’s reading the verse that stood out to me was Proverbs 26:11, As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly. I have read this verse many times and it seems like every time I read it God reminds me of the wisdom it contains. We all know what is right and what is wrong. As imperfect human beings it is easy to make mistakes. But every time we return to the same mistakes and the places we know will lead us to sin, we are fools. We must listen to the Holy Spirit in our hearts and know that He is leading us away from the things that will lead us to sin and its consequences. Let us not be like a dog that returns to its vomit. Once we have removed the sinful parts of our lives, let us ask God on a daily basis to give us strength to stay away.
