We are going to take the next three days off from reading. We will resume on September 1 with the book of 1 Timothy. In the meantime I will try to post something for our reflection days. I found today’s video interesting. Let me know what you think.

Reflection

I saw this video yesterday and I though I would share it. It features an audio excerpt in the middle by John Piper talking about how nothing we experience in this life is meaningless. Everything we do and experience is meaningful and has purpose. I hope you enjoy it. Tomorrow we will begin reading the book of Ezra.

Love, Reflection

Today we read through 1 Corinthians 13, the “Love Chapter”. Most of us have been to a wedding where this chapter was read as an example of what Love is supposed to look like. If we take the time to read this chapter and truly understand what Love looks like, we can transform the way we treat each other, even our enemies, and be a true reflection of Christ. The end of the chapter, verse 13, is the most impactful, And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Let us remember that nothing worth having exists without Love being at the center. However, we must still make sure we love the right things, and we can only know what that is by following God’s leading in our lives.

Reflection, Wisdom

As we continue today in our reading in Luke, we are also breaking away from the book of Psalm and beginning to read the book of Ecclesiastes. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I appreciated this book and the wisdom behind it. The book of Ecclesiastes was written by Solomon towards the end of his life. At this point, Solomon is looking back at his life with regret over some of the choices he had made. He realizes at this point that most of the things he focused on throughout his life were basically meaningless. Ecclesiastes 1:2 it says, 2“Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.” Powerful words coming from a man who was arguably the richest man who had ever lived. He had at his disposal anything he could have ever wanted and at the end of his life he realizes it is all meaningless and worth nothing. These thoughts are evidenced in verse 14 where he says, I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. This is powerful information for all of us as we chase our wants and dreams during the few years we have on this earth. How many of us would look back at our lives and think the same thing?

Disciples, Reflection, Savior

We spend a lot of time coming ere every day to read the Bible. While this is obviously a very good thing, we must do more than just read God’s word. We must apply the things we learn and His commandments for our lives. Luke 6:49 says, “But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Let us not spend our time simply reading God’s word. Let us live out our lives based on God’s commands and the example left to us by Jesus Christ our savior.

Reflection

One of my favorite characters in the Bible is John the Baptist. The thing I love about him is how he lived his life and the sense of his purpose in the light of eternity. Everything John did in his life was to prepare the way for Jesus. Nothing was important to him other than glorifying God and paving the way for the Messiah. This is the perfect example of how we should be in relation to God. Don’t get me wrong, we do not need to live in the wilderness and eat locusts, but we should consciously do everything for the glory of God and to reflect Christ in our lives. John gave everything, including his life, for the glory of God. Are we willing to do the same?

Reflection, Sacrifice

Mark 8:35 is always a good reminder of what my priorities should be, For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. It does me no good to be concerned with self-preservation in this life, when the only life that matters is my life in eternity. As I start a new job today, this is a good nudge to remember my true purpose in this life. While I do not want to beat people with the gospel of Christ, I do need to be a reflection of Him in my life. I must keep Him in the front of my mind in all I do today and everyday.
