Obedience, Relationship, Sacrifice, Salvation

1 Corinthians 11:29 made me think this morning, For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. Many times I approach communion at my church one of two ways: 1) It’s just an exercise I must go through because my church said so, or 2) I don’t feel worthy of participating because of where my heart may be or because of a struggle I am facing. As far as the first issue; it is important to approach communion with the proper heart. I think it is better to not participate than to just go through the motions for the sake of others around you. As for the second; when we approach communion we must remember why we are doing it. Communion is a remembrance of what Christ did for us on the cross. He expects us to come before Him as an imperfect sinner who needed His sacrifice. The more we recognize how fallen we are, the more communion brings us closer to God if we approach it with the right attitude and state of mind.

2014 Day 53 – 1 Corinthians 8

God, Knowledge, Obedience, Relationship

Having good and foundational knowledge about the Bible is good, but it does not replace having a relationship with God and knowing Him in a personal way. 1 Corinthians 8:2-3 says, 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. 3 But whoever loves God is known by God. The second part of this passage says there is something more important than us knowing God, and it is that God knows us. God loves us and wants to have a strong and meaningful relationship. What a privilege it is to be loved by God in this way. Let us never lose sight of that.

Fellowship, Relationship

There are days I long for simplicity in life. A life where I didn’t have anything, or at least very few things. I spend to much time worrying about things. Life would be much simpler and I would probably focus on God more if I had few things to worry about. In 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul says,  29 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they do not; 30 those who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to keep; 31 those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away. All of the things in are lives, whether it is relationships, possessions, or even our feelings should not own us and keep us from focusing on what is really important; our relationship with God. In the end, everything will burn and what remains is our eternal relationship with our Heavenly Father.

2014 Day 35 – 1 Thessalonians 1

Relationship

Today we begin the first book of Thessalonians, which was a letter to the church in Thessalonica. While this church was very young in their faith, they were making great progress. As a young church they also needed to continue the maturing process in their faith. In turn, this letter is important to all believers because it shows the importance of growing in spiritual maturity. While maturity does not make us any more “saved” than an immature believer, it does allow us to be closer and more intimate with God as we grow closer to Him. Think of a child’s relationship with their parent. As the child grows up, so does the level of trust and depth in the relationship; the same applies to our relationship with God. The more mature I become in my faith, the more my relationship grows with God.

Fellowship, Relationship

God is never far away from us. He is always near enough so we can seek Him. Acts 17:27 says, God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. God does not force Himself on anyone. He wants a relationship with us, but He also wants us to want one with Him as well. God is patient and loving and is willing to wait for us to be ready. We must remember that a life in relationship with God is much more rewarding than a life without Him. So, why wait?

2014 Day 30 – Galatians 5

Holy Spirit, Peace, Relationship

One of my favorite passages of the Bible is Galatians 5:22-24, 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by listening to the Holy Spirit and feel His presence in our lives, only good can come out of it. God wants us to experience all the good things in life. Not that we won’t experience difficulty, but what come out of our lives in all circumstances reflect the goodness of God.

Grace, Relationship, Salvation

I always love reading Galatians 3:28 because Jesus is the great equalizer, There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. When Jesus came as a sacrifice for our sins He also made us all equal heirs. Why is this so hard for so many believers to understand? I will leave this passage up to each of you for interpretation, but to me it is clear what Paul is trying to say. I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

2014 Day 21 – James 4

Blessings, Glory, Relationship

Do you ever feel like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling? When we ask God for something we need to really examine our intent behind the request. James 4:3 says, When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. Wrong motives may not always be the reason why God doesn’t answer. Sometime is may just be a “wait” or a “not now”. The key is to remember our purpose in this life, which is to honor and glorify God in all we do. God is not a vending machine where we simply make a deposit and then select our reward. It is about a relationship with God so that He may be glorified and we may be blessed through His glory and service to Him.

Obedience, Relationship

One of the things we must remember as we read the book of Acts is this is an example of how we should live as believers. I’m not necessarily saying we should sell all our possessions, but we should learn to focus on serving God more and focus less on serving our own interests. Life as a believer is simple; love others, serve them, and help bring them to a closer relationship with God. The rest is less important to God and simply makes us feel more important in the eyes of others.

Relationship

Today we being the final book of the New Testament, Malachi. This book was written 430 B.C. and its purpose was to confront the people with their sins and to restore their relationship with God. Malachi is the bridge between the Old and New Testament. As we read this book let us put ourselves in the place of the recipient of these words and evaluate where our relationship is with God right now.
