Relationship

We all love to act like we will make it to a ripe old age. We plan our careers, our retirement, and our lives as though we were guaranteed to be around until the day of our choosing. We also act as if our lives, in and of themselves, and our action will be remembered by all generations to come. Verse 14 reminds us what our lives really are, Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. We must remember that our lives are limited but they are meant to have purpose. The key is to remember that the purpose is designed by God and to be executed for His eternal glory, not ours. In Francis Chan’s book, “Crazy Love”, he reminded me that in 50 years after my death no one but my direct descendants will even remember that a guy named Dino ever even lived here. However, the influence of my life through the power of God can have a significant impact in the world I leave behind, especially in the lives of those I directly influence to future generations.

2012 Day 134 – James 2

Faith, Relationship, Sacrifice, Servant

Ahhh, I just love the book of James… Did I mention that already? Anyway, in James 2 there are some powerful words about faith and works we Christians love to wrestle with. There are some of us who like to believe that faith alone is sufficient. Then there are those of us who think works are necessary for either salvation or proof of a changed heart. My humble opinion is there is more to the story. Verses 17 – 19 bring a lot to the discussion, 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder. Faith alone implies that belief is sufficient and in verse 19 it clearly states that “even the demons believe”. Our faith and our belief should lead us into relationship with God, which in turn should compel us into action and to serve Him. We simply can not take Jesus’ sacrifice and accept it as the end of our responsibilities when He clearly commanded us to be His hands and feet. Remember Matthew 25:44-45?? 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ If we are not producing action and following His commands based on our faith then as verse 17 says it is dead. For some reason there are Christians who believe that works somehow cheapens Christ’s sacrifice for us. I believe that our actions reinforce the power of a changed heart that can only come from His sacrifice and perfect love for us.

Relationship, Reward

So, today we start one of my favorite books in the Bible, the book of James. There are a lot of people who do not like this book because it tends to get under our skin and convict us. This book also has my favorite verse in the Bible; James 1:12, Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. This verse reminds us that we will all have trials. It’s hard to accept, but the reward James is talking about may not come in this lifetime. However, when we have a meaningful and growing relationship with God, we know that this life is nothing but a blink in the light of eternity.

Protection, Relationship

Today’s Psalms were written by David during some very desperate times. I love how he turns his hopelessness to the one place he knows he will find relief. In verses 6 and 7 of chapter 142 it says, 6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. 7 Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me. All David wants to do is to give God the glory for delivering him. How often do I pray to God to deliver me from a situation, then as soon as I am free I forget where it came from. It is only through a close relationship with God that I can know who is my provider and deliverer.

Relationship

In this chapter, Solomon really hammers a warning against the adulteress. And while I know he is probably speaking literally, this warning is also applicable for anything that takes our attention away from our relationship with God. Verses 22 and 23 paint a clear picture of what happens when we allow ourselves to lose focus; 22 All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose 23 till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. This is a scary description of what happens when we allow ourselves to be led away from our relationship with God and into the path of destruction. It is very much like a marriage, where the more we focus on our spouse, the less we have time to focus on anyone else. The same applies to God; if we are consistently focused on Him, we won’t have time to focus on the things that lead us away from Him.

Relationship, Trust

Verse 23 sums it up for me, Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Our heart dictates how we live because we always find time to do what we enjoy. We need to guard our hearts to make sure we only allow things that are pleasing to God. We need to keep our eyes, heart, and mind focused directly at our goal of having a relationship with God and not allow ourselves to be distracted by other things in our lives. God want our full attention and we need to give it.

Love, Relationship

This last chapter of the Gospels is so wonderful! I love the way Jesus leaves His disciples; with a clear understanding of His love and a clear direction for them to follow. When Jesus says “Feed my sheep” or “Feed my lambs” He is indicating the types of love they should have (first two times Greek agape: volitional, self-sacrificial love) and (the third time Greek phileo: signifying affection, affinity, or brotherly love). When I read these passages it makes me wonder and question if I truly love Jesus. Do I really love Jesus? Am I really His friend? I want to be, but it doesn’t happen by accident. It takes work and commitment to building and maintaining a relationship with Him.

Obedience, Relationship

Often times we question why God does what He does. We forget that He has a perfect plan. In the first part of this chapter, Peter assumed that God’s plan was something other than what he had envisioned. Jesus had to reprimand Peter and let Him know that God had the situation under control. Verse 11, Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” Sometimes we question what God is doing in our lives, but ultimately His plan is perfect even though, for us, it doesn’t always feel that way. God’s plan is more important than our individual circumstances. That doesn’t mean we are not important to Him, it just means we need to understand there is a purpose in everything God does.

Relationship

When we read verses 4-8 where it says 4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. we as Christian get very excited. We think, surely this is the “beginning of birth pains”. We all need to be careful that we not lose sight of our purpose here on earth and focus on the end. God has us here for a specific purpose and we are to focus on our relationship with Him and on being a reflection of Him. If we know Him well, we will not be deceive by those claiming to be Him.

Obedience, Relationship

In today’s reading I do not have a verse that struck me, but instead I have an observation. As Christians we will sometimes win battles here on earth, but in the end the war is not ours to win. Jesus was able to combat and dispute everything they threw at Him, and yet, they still killed Him. I know what you are thinking… “In the back of the book it’s says we win” and that is true, just remember that God’s path to His final plan sometimes leads us to lose some wars in order to arrive final victory. My point is this; we may be smarter than the people around us and may be able to logically win a philosophical battle, but most importantly the plan is that we are obedient to God. Unless there is heart change in the individual we are talking to, no amount of logic or smart responses will ever convince someone to have a relationship with God. There is a time when bold defense of our faith is needed and there is also a time when defense of my faith is nothing more than a victory for me and does nothing to further the Kingdom of God.
