Holy Spirit, Obedience, Righteousness

It is hard to be on the “go” all the time. We all want to be able to coast every once in a while. But resting for too long can be detrimental to your future. God calls us to be diligent in all we do. Proverbs 24:33-34 says, A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of hands to rest – 34 and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. If we take it easy for too long, it will ultimately cost us everything.
In the same vein, if we feel it is OK to cut corners, instead of doing what is right all the time, it will eventually cause us to accept mediocrity in all we do. Stay diligent and continuously look to the Holy Spirit for leading and guidance.

Holy Spirit, Righteousness

While I do not have issues with drinking alcoholic beverages, it should not be consumed as a means of controlling our behavior. Proverbs 20:1 says: Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Anything you allow in your life to control you is bad, no matter what it is. The only thing we can ever allow in our lives to control us is the Holy Spirit, who will never lead us down the wrong path.

Integrity, Righteousness

A righteous life is much better than a wealthy one. Proverbs 19:1 says: Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. Do not sacrifice your integrity to gain the temporary satisfaction of wealth. A righteous life has a greater impact on eternity than money ever will.

Love, Righteousness

Love for God and love for sin cannot coexist. Proverbs 8:13 says, To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. To harbor sin in your life is to tolerate evil. By committing ourselves fully to God we work to break from sin. We will never be perfect, but we should always strive towards righteousness.

Power, Righteousness

There is no better weapon against the evils of this world than God’s word in our hearts reminding us of righteousness. Proverbs 7:1 says, My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. God’s word stored in us is both powerful and sweet to our soul.

Forgiveness, Repentance, Righteousness

Sin is sin, there is no getting around it. And when we sin, we live as though there is no right or wrong. 1 John 3:4 says: Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. It is one thing to sin, it is something completely different to continue sinning. We all sin, but we can not hide from continual sin and act as though it is normal. When we sin, we must confess our sin and work towards sinning no more.

Faith, Righteousness

Today we read Hebrews 11, also known as the “Faith Chapter”. One of the examples of faith from today’s reading that stood out to me is Hebrews 11:4, But faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead. The reason this passage stood out to me is because even though Abel did the right thing, he still died for it. Too many people complain about how unfair this life can be, but if God can use the bad to show the good, is it not worth it? By Abel’s death we still speak of his righteousness and see a wonderful example of faith. If bad things in our life can show others the good, then maybe it is all part of God’s plan.

Grace, Righteousness

Why do we hang onto our attempts at righteousness through our own efforts? Christ died on the cross to make our own efforts towards righteousness obsolete. In Hebrews 8:13 Paul says: By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear. Since Christ died on the cross for our sins we no longer have to strive for perfection through our own works because Christ has made us perfect in God’s eyes through His sacrifice on the cross for us.

Grace, Mercy, Righteousness

Before Christ came into our lives, we were both literally and figuratively lost. 1 Peter 2:25 says, For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Through Christ’s sacrifice for each of us on the cross, we were given a path to righteousness. This righteousness matters to God more than it matters to people around us; always keep this in mind when we are tempted to boast.

Grace, Righteousness

God sets the standard for morality. It does not come from the majority of people. In 1 Peter 1:16 we are reminded of this, For it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” If we needed a reason to be holy, this is it. We are to be a reflection of God. We will never be perfect, but because we are forgiven, our righteousness should give us the desire and ability to be a reflection of our perfect savior and Lord to the best of our ability.
