2016 Day 224 – Titus 1

Righteousness, Trust, Truth

Today we begin Paul’s letter to Titus who was one of the church leaders on the island of Crete. The purpose of this letter was to advise Titus of his responsibilities and to teach him. In Titus 1:15 Paul warns Titus of people whose lives are so corrupt they cannot see the truth: To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupt. These people are unable to see the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, they attempt to justify their behavior and make good people out to be the ones who are wrong. If we look around, and are honest with ourselves, we see these people all around us today in our current world. Be aware of them and do not allow them to persuade you that you are doing something wrong in your righteousness.

2016 Day 214 – Philippians 3

Righteousness, Truth

Just because something sounds good, moral, and/or ethical does not mean it is. Unless we are willing to take the time and compare what we hear to God’s truth, then we are destined to be deceived by what this world has to teach us. In Philippians 3:2 Paul warns us, Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those manipulators of the flesh. We hear it all the time in the media when people talk about tolerance. Tolerance has a broad appeal which, if we allow, has the potential to lead us to accept even the things God has clearly said were wrong. The best way to mitigate deception is to take it to the source of truth. If you believe the Bible, then you have already have access to the truth.

Righteousness

It is not enough to just know the truth. If we are not transformed into a new person, then we miss the power of the Gospel. In Romans 2:13 Paul says, For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. Obeying the Law is not what saves us, but when we are truly changed by the power of God, we are made righteous and it reflects from everything we are.

2016 Day 161 – 2 Corinthians 2

Righteousness, Salvation

Because we are saved through Christ, 2 Corinthians 2:15 says we have the aroma of Christ, For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. There is a distinct contrast in the aroma of something fully alive and something dying. Weather it is fruit, vegetables, plants, or animals, you can smell the freshness or lack thereof. It is the same difference in the aroma we are to God when we are saved and active believers through Christ.

Righteousness

We must be honest with ourselves when it comes to sin in our lives. It is better if we judge ourselves for our shortcomings than allow others do it for us. In 1 Corinthians 11:31 Paul says, But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgement. Only God can truly judge us, but if we spend more of our time looking through the eyes of Christ at our level of righteousness, we would know where we fall short and work to improve it.

Grace, Righteousness

Believers today are in danger of living as if Christ died for nothing. All that Paul fought for in his ministry is in danger every time we act as though “being good” makes us righteous. Paul reiterates this in Galatians 2:21, I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing. We are in danger of living a life as though Christ died for nothing. If we place ourselves in a position of comparing ourselves against the rest of the world through our ability to act righteously, we will fail and gain nothing. Christ alone makes us righteous, and until we make the comparison about Him, we will always be seen as no better than the rest of the world.

Obedience, Righteousness, Sacrifice, Truth

I cannot imagine anyone who would happily be persecuted for most causes. But in Matthew 5:11-12 Jesus calls it a blessing, 11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. When we are persecute for the cause of Christ, it should be taken as a badge of honor. When we stand up for truth and righteousness we are rewarded in the eyes of God. It is not easy, but few things worth fighting for ever are.

Obedience, Righteousness, Salvation

Do you ever get the impression Jesus healed people on the Sabbath on purpose? It seems like Jesus took several opportunities to do this and it wasn’t an accident. Jesus begins to explain why in Mark 3:4, Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:  to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to kill?” But they remained silent. One of Jesus’ principle reasons for coming to earth was to fulfill the law. He makes it clear later on that He was not here to abolish it. The law had it’s purpose, and it’s purpose was to bring people to a point where they recognized their unrighteousness and their need for repentance. When Jesus came, there was no longer a need for rules to remind people of their sinful nature because now Jesus became our only way to salvation and eternal life with Him. From this point on we were no longer in competition with each other to see who could be more holy by following the rules. Our only task in life is to reflect who Jesus is. That is what is means to be “Christ-like”.

Obedience, Peace, Righteousness

Living a righteous life is pleasing to God, but there is also a practical purpose; to live free from entrapment of sin over our lives. Proverbs 29:6 says, An evil man is snared by his own sin, but a righteous one can sing and be glad. There is peace in living a righteous life.

Blessings, Righteousness, Wisdom

At 47, I am facing my mortality more and more each day. It is hard to feel good about becoming older and slowly losing all the physical abilities I once had. But gray hair is something that should not be disgraced. Proverbs 16:31 says, Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life. The Hebrews believed gray hair was the reflection of a long life and a sign of God’s blessing from a righteous life. We should all respect the elderly who have lived a life walking with God. They are an example to all of us.
