Righteousness

In today’s reading, 1 Corinthians 10:31 stood out to me. It says, So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. God is much more concerned with our heart than with our actual actions. We get so hung up on our actions and the grandeur of it that we sometimes forget it does not matter how big our accomplishments are. Nothing we could ever do comes close to what God is capable of doing. Who are we trying to compete against, God? In God’s eyes our heart is all that matters.

Redeemer, Relationship, Righteousness, Sanctification

I am still getting a lot out of reading the book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 stood out to me today, 20 Indeed, there is no one on earth who is righteous, no one who does what is right and never sins. 21 Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you. We must never sit back and compare ourselves with other people sin-for-sin. It is easy to look at the sin in someone else’s life and make ourselves look righteous because we do not have the same issues. But in the end, no one is righteous. Our righteousness comes from sanctification we can not provide for ourselves. In Solomon’s day it came from the sacrificing of animals and offerings set by the law. Our sanctification comes from Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Let us not forget that our efforts bring us no closer to righteousness than the oblivious acts of a fool who does not know Christ. Let us not take on the role of Christ in our lives by thinking we are good enough or that our efforts bring us closer to God; because they do not. Relationship is the only thing that brings us closer to God, nothing else. And distance from God comes from a lack of relationship with Him, not our sin.

Power, Righteousness, Trust

How many times have you seen someone and thought, “that person looks interesting”, then once you meet them you are disappointed? We tend to make our first impressions of people based on outward appearance. Thankfully, God bases importance on the heart and what is inside the person. If God had based David’s potential on his appearance as a boy, he never would have become the greatest king the Israelites ever had. 1 Samuel 16:7 shows what God thinks is important, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” For me, this is very encouraging. Knowing that God does not judge for my outward appearance gives me hope for what God can still do through me. He can continue to make me righteous on the inside and still use me for many great things with the remainder of my life.

Grace, Righteousness, Salvation

I guess one could argue, if God loves to forgive, why not give Him more to forgive. Romans 6:1-2 says, 1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? The purpose of salvation is to free us from the power of sin and the hold it has on us. Once we are saved, we should no longer want to be controlled by sin. Does this mean we need to be perfect? No, but we should seek righteousness through the saving power of Jesus Christ and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Grace, Mercy, Righteousness, Salvation

Yes, we are saved through grace. Yes, Christ’s sacrifice atones for all our sin. But we are still called to be a reflection of Christ and to be changed by His mercy and grace. In Romans 2:6-8 it says, 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. We must be persistent in doing good because it honors God and glorifies Him.

Obedience, Righteousness

As we continue our reading in the book of Joshua, we see the Israelites continuing their siege on the people living on their promised land. I have to admit, this is a very harsh scene to read about. It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to be commanded to eliminate and entire city and its inhabitants. But this is what God required. Don’t get me wrong, God is not in the business of destroying entire countries simply for His pleasure, but He is in the business of taking people over completely. God requires us to share who He is and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ to everyone and He requires us to be righteous in the process. Thankfully He provides righteousness through the blood of Christ and constant leading through the Holy Spirit in our hearts. We must be open to this and we must allow His plans to be accomplished through us completely, just as He did (in a very different way) in the book of Joshua.
