Joy, Sacrifice, Servant

I love reading how Jesus always brought out the least of those in His society. In today’s reading, Jesus made it a point to lift women up from their low status in their society to the point of experiencing joy in fellowship and service with other believers. In today’s reading, Luke even mentions some of them by name. Luke 8:2-3 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. By allowing these women to travel with Him and be a part of His ministry, Jesus showed that all people are equal under God. These women owed a great debt of gratitude to Jesus because he had healed many and even drove out demons from many of them.

2015 Day 21 – Matthew 11

Sacrifice, Servant

In today’s reading, Jesus takes time to praise John the Baptist and to explain how his example as one of the least of us has eternal impact on the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 11:11 says, “I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” While John made himself low among the people of that time, he also showed how greatness comes from that position of lowliness. Our reward here on earth can never compare to the reward we will see in heaven. As we serve, let us serve with eternity in mind.

Forgiveness, Sacrifice, Salvation

It is so easy to compare ourselves to others in the game of “Who’s Sin Is Worse”. However, Jesus never asked us to be the judge over anyone’s sin (including our own). Matthew 6:1-2 quotes Jesus saying, 1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” God is the only one qualified to look at a person’s life and judge their actions. In the same way, God is the only one qualified to forgive sin through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. When we waste our time looking at others through our own eyes and not through the eyes of Jesus, we fail to see the perfection brought to them and us through Jesus.

Crucifixion, Sacrifice, Salvation

Today’s reading is all about the crucifixion of Christ. There is so much in this chapter that it’s hard to focus on one thing. But what stood out to me was Matthew 27:38, Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right and one on His left. I am not sure if there is any symbolism to this, but to me it paints the picture of us with Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross, he did it for our salvation. It should have been us dying that horrible death, but He did it for us because He loved us. We are nothing more than common criminals and yet Jesus found us worth of being saved. We must never take that for granted.

Sacrifice, Salvation

Jesus knows we are not perfect and He does not expect us to be perfect. In fact, He expects us to be imperfect. It is the exact reason why He came to die for our sins. Jesus’ interaction with Peter was a prime example of what His expectation are of us in Matthew 26:34, “I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” Even though Jesus knew Peter would disown Him, and even though this was obviously frustrating, it did not change who Jesus is or how He would react to His circumstances. Jesus came to sacrifice Himself for our sins and there is nothing Peter or anyone else could have done to change that; just like there is nothing we can do to change His love for us today.

John 12:24 give a beautiful picture of what Christ’s death really means for us. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Christ died so that the whole world could live.

I love 2 Timothy 4:7-8, 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. My hope is when I reach the end of my life I can say the same thing.

Jesus, Sacrifice, Salvation

Because of Christ, the work is done for our salvation through His perfect sacrifice. Hebrews 9:14 says, How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! We are no longer expected to work and go through the work of sacrifices through priest for the atonement of our sins. Christ was the perfect sacrifice once and for all. We must learn to live in that state of cleared conscience He has provided us.

Obedience, Peace, Sacrifice, Trust

There have been many times in my life where I have felt worn down, tired, and weary and I have found myself growing more frustrated with every step. What I have found during those times is I find fulfillment when I allow myself to be obedient to God’s perfect plan. Without God’s guidance and without our obedience to Him, our accomplishments mean nothing. In Act 20:24 Paul says an incredibly profound statements, However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. Whether it is a life of poverty or riches, when we live according to God’s plan for our lives, we find fulfillment. It is when we try to shape our desires into meaningless sacrificial service that we grow tired and weary. God’s plan is perfect.

2014 Day 57 – 1 Corinthians 11

Obedience, Relationship, Sacrifice, Salvation

1 Corinthians 11:29 made me think this morning, For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. Many times I approach communion at my church one of two ways: 1) It’s just an exercise I must go through because my church said so, or 2) I don’t feel worthy of participating because of where my heart may be or because of a struggle I am facing. As far as the first issue; it is important to approach communion with the proper heart. I think it is better to not participate than to just go through the motions for the sake of others around you. As for the second; when we approach communion we must remember why we are doing it. Communion is a remembrance of what Christ did for us on the cross. He expects us to come before Him as an imperfect sinner who needed His sacrifice. The more we recognize how fallen we are, the more communion brings us closer to God if we approach it with the right attitude and state of mind.
