2015 Day 44 – John 9

Love, Salvation, Servant

When Jesus came as the Messiah, he came to turn everything on it’s head from what the religious leaders expected. John 9:39, Jesus said, “For judgement I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” What the Pharisees believed about the Messiah was only partially true, but they were so concerned about tradition that they missed the details around who the Messiah would be and His purpose. For us, wasting time working towards perfection and forgetting about taking care of and loving others is not why He came. To be Christ-like does not mean to be perfect, it means servanthood to those who need it the most.

2015 Day 40 – Mark 9

Forgiveness, Sacrifice, Salvation, Servant

In Jesus’ eyes we are all equal. No sin is great than the other and no amount of grace received is in more abundance than any other. The same is true when it comes to our salvation; none of us is greater than any other. Mark 9:35, Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Ultimately, none of us is greater than any other. We all deserve death, which should give us a sense of overwhelming gratitude for the level of forgiveness we have all received.

Forgiveness, Sacrifice, Salvation

It is so easy to compare ourselves to others in the game of “Who’s Sin Is Worse”. However, Jesus never asked us to be the judge over anyone’s sin (including our own). Matthew 6:1-2 quotes Jesus saying, 1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” God is the only one qualified to look at a person’s life and judge their actions. In the same way, God is the only one qualified to forgive sin through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ. When we waste our time looking at others through our own eyes and not through the eyes of Jesus, we fail to see the perfection brought to them and us through Jesus.

Holy Spirit, Jesus, Righteousness, Salvation

As I read Mark 2:23-24, I thought about modern day Christians in comparison to the Pharisees in the time of Christ, 23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” As I get older and I read and study more about Jesus’ life, I have come to the realization that modern day “Christians” represent more of the life of the Pharisees than Christ Himself. We have become more comfortable holding onto rules and beliefs that have little or nothing to do with the saving grace of Jesus’ sacrifice and more to do with our own attempts to present a righteous life. While living a pure and righteous life is admirable, and is typically a reflection of changes brought by the presence of the Holy Spirit, the truth is it has very little to do with the grace and mercy Jesus provided through His sacrifice on the cross. As believers we must remember to meet people where they are and not require them to be where we think they are supposed to be. This can only come through an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior.

Forgiveness, Obedience, Salvation

John the Baptist was definitely an interesting character. One of the things I love about him is he speaks his mind and never worries about what others may say about him. John was completely single minded in his purpose on earth. There was no doubt why he was here and he devoted his entire life to announcing the coming of the Messiah and fulfilling prophesy. In Matthew 3:3, John shows through scripture what the prophet Isaiah had to say, This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ “ John’s purpose was also to teach how the message of repentance is good news to those who listen and seek forgiveness through the power of God’s healing love. John’s message is no different today than it was over 2,000 years ago.

Faith, Salvation

While the disciples were thrilled to see Jesus, He had to remind them that He had already told them how things would play out. In fact, all of scripture leading up to Christ was fulfilled in the process of His life and death and resurrection. Luke 24:44, He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” We often forget that the entire Bible, including the Old Testament, points to the Messiah. When we allow ourselves to see the truth as God meant for it to be, we see the whole story unfold before us and we see the purpose of Christ, our Savior, in our lives.

Eternity, Salvation

There has been a lot of talk over the last several years about whether there really is a hell. Mark 16:16 plainly shows there is, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Jesus Himself showed His disciples and, in turn us, the way to salvation and the consequences of not believing. If we believe the Bible and believe in the words recorded in scripture, we know the truth about salvation and hell. The only alternative is to believe that scripture is not accurate and therefore we make up our own conclusions.

Faith, Salvation

Hanging on the cross with two criminal, Jesus showed all of us that when we believe, we are given eternal life regardless of our past sin. Luke 23:43, Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” If the criminal hanging on the cross who, unlike Jesus, deserved to die was granted entrance into heaven, how much more are we? Jesus does not care about our past sin. He cares about our changed lives that can only come through Him.

Crucifixion, Sacrifice, Salvation

Today’s reading is all about the crucifixion of Christ. There is so much in this chapter that it’s hard to focus on one thing. But what stood out to me was Matthew 27:38, Two robbers were crucified with Him, one on His right and one on His left. I am not sure if there is any symbolism to this, but to me it paints the picture of us with Jesus. When Jesus died on the cross, he did it for our salvation. It should have been us dying that horrible death, but He did it for us because He loved us. We are nothing more than common criminals and yet Jesus found us worth of being saved. We must never take that for granted.

Relationship, Salvation

We tend to make salvation into something difficult. But in John 17:3 Jesus makes it clear and simple, Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. It comes down to knowing God and having a personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. It really is that simple.
