2014 Day 298 – Mark 6

Holy Spirit, Honor, Redeemer, Righteousness, Salvation

When Jesus visited His home town of Nazareth, the people took offense that a carpenter could speak with such authority and conduct miracles. Mark 6:4, Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor.” Jesus understood how people can be judged throughout their entire lives for what people think they are. They forget the power God has to transform anyone into a new creation. In Jesus’ case He was already transformed as God’s Son here on earth as a human and He is a perfect example of how God makes all things new. What we believe to be true about others, based on their past, does not define them. What does define them is the cleansing blood of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross to make all things new and make us worth of eternal life with Him.

2014 Day 290 – Matthew 13

I love the way Jesus worded Matthew 13:52, He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.” Jesus is talking about the value of understanding the Old Testament law because it is a real treasure. It points the way to Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus, as our example, always upheld the law’s authority and relevance. But ultimately He came to show us the the way to salvation through His sacrifice. Both the old and the new are important and are not separated. They fulfill the importance of both to the life of a believer and follower of Christ.

2014 Day 273 – John 3

Grace, Mercy, Salvation

John 3:16 is one of the most powerful verses in all of the New Testament. But John 3:17 is of equal importance, For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. God’s purpose for Jesus was salvation through His grace and mercy. He loved us so much that He gave us a way out of eternal death and into eternal life with Him. Verse 17 plainly states that God sent us a way to be saved if we just believe in Him. These are simple words with a simple plan if we just choose to accept it.

2014 Day 266 – Luke 3

Repentance, Salvation

I just realized I doubled last week’s reading with this week, so that means we are reading last week’s chapters again this week. Good thing these chapters are filled with information we can learn from.

This time around in Luke 3, the last sentence in verse 16 stood out to me, He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. Baptism with fire symbolizes the work of the Holy Spirit in bringing God’s judgement on those who refuse to repent. While God offers salvation freely, He does require us to repent and realize we cannot do it without His saving grace.

Forgiveness, Grace, Salvation

In today’s reading there is a lot of great information. The big thing that always stand out to me in Luke 5 is verses 31 and 32, 31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” The Pharisees, like many modern day Christian elite, thought the Messiah was coming for them only. God sent Jesus for people who recognize how broken they really are. No one, no matter how long you walk with Jesus, is perfect. We all need God’s grace and forgiveness for our sinful nature on a constant basis. I saw a sign the other day on social media that said, “God does not remember the sin in our lives we cannot forget.” Praise Him for that!

Jesus, Salvation

Today we begin to read the story of Jesus Christ in chronological order through the Gospels. From now through the last day of the year, we will skip throughout the different books of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) as we cover Christ’s birth through His crucifixion and resurrection.

We begin this journey in Luke chapter 1 with the incredible account of all God prepared for the coming of the Messiah. The most powerful verse to me in today’s reading is Luke 1:37, For nothing is impossible with God. From Elizabeth becoming pregnant with John the Baptist in her old age, to Mary’s virgin pregnancy, God was able to orchestrate His plan which ultimately leads to the perfect sacrifice for the atonement of our sins.

I hope you enjoy the journey over the next 3 1/2 months as we read the story of our Savior Jesus Christ.

2014 Day 250 – Alice Cooper

Forgiveness, Salvation

I grew up listening to hard rock and Alice Cooper was always a guilty pleasure. While I enjoyed his music, it always felt weird to listen to him because it seemed so far from the influences I should allow in my life. A few years ago I heard Alice Cooper was a believer and my first though was, “what? How?”. But then it became clear to me that God can change anyone. Turns out that Alice Cooper grew up in a Christian home and is a great example of the “prodigal son”. I hope you enjoy this video for our reflection day.

2014 Day 235 – Psalm 119:133-176

Freedom, Obedience, Salvation

When Christ came to save us from our sin, He did not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. Meaning; God’s commands are still important because they help direct our path, but we are no longer slaves who rely on the Law to save us. Psalm 119:165 says, Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. By using God’s command to help direct our path, we are given clear and safe direction for how we are to exist in this life free from the bondage of sin’s control on our lives.

2014 Day 231 – Proverbs 31

Obedience, Righteousness, Salvation

Sadly, today is our last day in Proverbs. I think I will somehow try to make proverbs a bigger part of our reading next year. But for today, the passage that stood out to me was Proverbs 31:30, Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. This verse is a good reminder for us all, not just to women. As we age, the things we once thought were so important will no longer matter. The only things that truly matter are those of eternal consequence.

2014 Day 193 – Revelation 21

Redeemer, Righteousness, Salvation

Just as God completed creation and Jesus completed the required work of salvation, so will the Trinity of God invite us all into the completed work of judgement that leads to righteousness in the new creation. Revelation 21:6 says, He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.
