2016 Day 106 – Acts 9

Grace, Mercy, Obedience, Salvation

A few years ago when I first read through the Bible, the biggest thing that stood out to me was this: There are no perfect men in the Bible (Jesus being the exception). And if God can use all these imperfect men to carry His message of grace, mercy, and salvation, then there is hope for me. One of the most unlikely instruments to carry our God’s perfect plan was the Apostle Paul. In Acts 9:15-16 we see what God has in store for him, 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” God does not wait for us to be perfect, He waits for us to be willing. There is nothing we can do (aside from rejecting God altogether) that precludes us from being used by God in His perfect plan. We just have to be willing.

2016 Day 90 – John 19

Sacrifice, Salvation

Jesus died an excruciatingly painful death. It was physically painful, but it was just as painful spiritually and emotionally. Jesus’ last moments are captured in John 19:30, When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished,” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. At that moment Jesus’ suffering ended. But it did not just end for Him, but for us as well. He took on all the pain and suffering for us so we would not have to experience it ourselves. When we stop and contemplate what it all really means we see how big of a sacrifice He made on our behalf.

Jesus, the only perfect man to walk the face of the earth, died on the cross to atone for our sins. We are no different than the men who hung on the cross with Jesus. One of the men even acknowledged Jesus’ sacrifice for all Luke 23:41 “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Let us never forget our sinfulness and our unworthiness to be forgiven of our sin through Jesus’ sacrifice. He took our place on the cross and for that reason alone we will live for eternity.

2016 Day 86 – Mark 15

After Jesus was crucified, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body to be buried. Pilate, though he was surprised Jesus died so quickly, gave the body to Joseph. In Mark 15:46-47 we read about what Joseph did with Jesus’ body, 46 So Joseph brought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in the tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. So… Today we wait. But tomorrow is coming.

Today is Good Friday, and one of the most painful days in the history of our faith. It all came down to this in Matthew 27:50 And when Jesus had cried out in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. But just remember… Sunday is coming!

We should never be surprised by how much people want to judge us for following Christ. On more than one occasion I have hear my faith called a “fairy tale”. But in Mark 13:13 Jesus warns us of this, “All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Jesus knew people would judge us based on what we believe and who we believe in. But in the end, it will all be worth it. Our faith and our willingness to stand for truth will result in our reward of eternity. It’s not always easy, but it will always be worth it.

Eternity, Love, Salvation

When we accept Christ’s gift of salvation, we no longer have to worry about eternal death. In the beginning of today’s reading Jesus is talking about the final resurrection, but the truth still remains that we are alive in Christ through eternity. Jesus says to the religious leader in Luke 20:38, He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive. If all there is after this life on earth is death, then it would not matter who God is, why He created us, or whether He loves us or not. But God loves us through eternity because we will be alive.

Faith, Salvation, Trust

When the disciples asked Jesus who could really be saved, Jesus replied in Matthew 19:26, Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” The beauty of Jesus’ reply is how true it is for all things. When we believe and trust in Jesus all things are possible. This doesn’t mean our will is done, it means God’s plan is perfect and will happen no matter the circumstances.

Salvation

In today’s reading Jesus tells the parable of the great feast. The parable was really about the rejection of Jesus by the Jews. In the end, because the Jews refused to accept Jesus as Messiah, the invitation for salvation was opened to all people. The last verses of the parable plainly states the outcome in Luke 14:23-24, 23 “Then the master told the servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country and make them come, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those men who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'” As a result of the Jews rejecting Christ as savior, we are the adopted children of God, and as such, we receive the same inheritance.

Messiah, Salvation, Truth

The Messiah is the only one who could give us salvation. John 7:37 says, On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” When He said “come to me and drink”, He was referring to the many themes in the Bible where it talks about the Messiah’s life-giving blessings. Because of His promise to give the Holy Spirit to all who believed, Jesus was claiming to be the only one who could actually do this; the Messiah. Jesus gave everyone, the religious leaders and common people alike, the ability to accept Him for who He really was. It is sad to know many rejected Him out of pride and selfish ambition. Let us all humble ourselves to believe the truth no matter what the ultimate circumstances.
