2016 Day 39 – Matthew 17

Love, resurrection, Salvation

In today’s reading Matthew 17:22-23 stood out to me because of the Disciple’s limited understanding of why Jesus came, 22 When the disciples came together in Galilee, he said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. 23 They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.” And the disciples were filled with grief. The disciples were upset because they did not want Jesus to be betrayed or to suffer, but they missed the bugger picture of the resurrection. Jesus came to earth for one reason and that was to save us. Jesus did this in the most difficult of circumstances, but He did it anyway because He loved us all so much.

Eternity, Salvation

Jesus talked a lot about the “Bread of Life” today. Most of the religious leaders and people in general had a hard time understanding what Jesus meant by this. In John 6:27 Jesus says, “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” It was hard to grasp what Jesus was saying because most of them thought He was speaking literally. But Jesus was talking about the sacrifice of His life to provide eternal life for all of us. We simply have to believe and accept His gift of His life as the sacrifice that gives us “food that endures to eternity”.

Eternity, Obedience, Relationship, Salvation

Fear is a human emotion we all possess. Even the most hardened soldier experiences fear in the heat of battle. But here in Matthew 10:28, Jesus tells us not to fear those who can only kill our physical bodies, Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. What we should fear is what can kill us for eternity. This can only happen when we submit ourselves to a life apart from God. Jesus gives us salvation to prevent us from separation from God. There are no excuses, just poor choices which keep us from eternity with Him.

Grace, Sacrifice, Salvation

I love the parable Jesus tells of the hidden treasure in Matthew 13:44, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” In the parable, the man knew the value of the treasure was so great he was willing to sell everything in order to have it. This is what our relationship with Christ is like; it costs us everything to receive the full value of the treasure of salvation.

Faith, Love, Salvation

One of my favorite stories of Jesus is the one with the Centurion’s sick servant and the faith he displayed to Jesus and His ability to heal and save. The Centurion was a gentile and was probably not someone who knew there was a Messiah coming to save the world, but he saw what was happening and he accepted what was possible by putting his faith in Jesus. Jesus Himself reacted to this man’s faith in Matthew 8:10, When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, “I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.” Knowing what is possible with Jesus is all we really need to believe He can do miracles in our lives. May we all have the faith of the Centurion and know Jesus has the ability to save and heal us. And, most importantly, let us all know and have faith Jesus has the capacity to love us more than we ever thought possible, despite the flaws and sin in our lives.

Obedience, Righteousness, Salvation

Do you ever get the impression Jesus healed people on the Sabbath on purpose? It seems like Jesus took several opportunities to do this and it wasn’t an accident. Jesus begins to explain why in Mark 3:4, Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath:  to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to kill?” But they remained silent. One of Jesus’ principle reasons for coming to earth was to fulfill the law. He makes it clear later on that He was not here to abolish it. The law had it’s purpose, and it’s purpose was to bring people to a point where they recognized their unrighteousness and their need for repentance. When Jesus came, there was no longer a need for rules to remind people of their sinful nature because now Jesus became our only way to salvation and eternal life with Him. From this point on we were no longer in competition with each other to see who could be more holy by following the rules. Our only task in life is to reflect who Jesus is. That is what is means to be “Christ-like”.

Salvation

There is very little I can say to enhance today’s reading of the Christmas story. Praise be to Jesus and the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Merry Christmas!!!

Faith, Protection, Salvation, Trust

Miracles were a part of Jesus’ life from the very beginning. It all started with the Magi coming from the East. How did these men know the Christ was born? Did they even know He was the Messiah? But they showed up anyway through miraculous guidance. Then Herod wanted Jesus dead, but the Magi were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod in order to protect the future Savior of the World. Then Joseph was warned to take his family to Egypt to further protect Jesus from death. God protected the Messiah in miraculous ways and He did it for our benefit. Not just for the obvious reason of protecting our Savior, but also so we would know God’s hand was in it from the beginning. God loves us so much He is willing to move mountains on our behalf. Providing a way to eternal salvation was just the beginning.

Power, Salvation

There is only one way to salvation and it is through a relationship with God. In Psalm 62:2 David says, He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. When we take our eyes off of God, and our relationship with Him, we are swayed in every direction. But when we stand on the power of God, we cannot be moved.

Salvation, Trust, Truth

God is the true testimony about His Son Jesus Christ and the purpose of His coming to earth to die for our sins. The second part of 1 John 5:10 says Anyone who does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because he has not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. We either believe God or we don’t. Jesus is the Son of God and He died for all of us because He loves us. It’s a simple truth.
