2015 Day 188 – Romans 11

Grace, Mercy, Sacrifice, Salvation

God owes us nothing. In the grand scheme of things, we have done nothing that requires God’s repayment to us. In the doxology at the end of this chapter, in Romans 11:35, Paul says, “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?” God has given to us even when we did not deserved it. When we question God for not giving us our own selfish desires, we should be thankful instead for all He has given. If God had given us nothing more than salvation from eternal death through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, it should have been enough. Anything else we desire says more about us than it will ever say about God.

Salvation, Servant

I love the quote Paul makes in Romans 10:15, “How beatiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” We are blessed to be called by God as His servant in bringing the good news of salvation to those who do not believe.

Freedom, Salvation

I love everything about what Paul is saying in Romans 8, and in the end, Romans 8:37 says everything we need to know about our faith and what a relationship with Christ brings us, No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. No matter what our lives appear to be here on earth, we conquer it all when it comes to eternity through the gift of salvation.

God, Holy Spirit, Jesus, Protection, Salvation

Our sin nature will always be a force in our lives. It will always want to push us into doing the things we know are wrong even when we know the potential to hurt us. In Romans 7:15 Paul says I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. Without the power of the Holy Spirit in us to change, and the grace of God through Jesus Christ, we would forever face a losing battle. Praise God for showing us grace and giving us a a path to salvation.

Faith, Obedience, Salvation

In today’s reading we come across one of the most powerful verses in the Bible and a foundation of our faith: Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are welcome to choose between a life of sin and the gift of God through Jesus Christ. While choosing Christ does not completely eliminate the sin from our life, it does eliminated the eternal consequences. Choosing to live a life of sin has only one wage; death. Without the acceptance of God’s gift to us through Christ, we are left with nothing but death. Choose life!

Repentance, Salvation

When we attempt to bring others to a place of repentance based on our own convictions, we fail. It is only through God’s conviction, through the Holy Spirit, that brings true repentance leading to salvation. In 2 Corinthians 7:10 Paul says, Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. When we act like everyone else, in self-righteous judgement, we bring no one closer to God or a place where they can repent. God called us to love Him and love others. Everything outside of that, especially judgement, is unproductive and leads people further away and not closer to Him.

Blessings, Salvation

Once we have received God’s grace through salvation, it is easy to take it for granted over time. In 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 Paul urges the Corinthians to take a different approach, 1 As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. Many people do not see the urgency of making the decision to follow Christ. They feel there is time and see little benefit in making that decision a priority. The truth is there is no better time than the present . When we put off the decision to follow Christ, we also put off the potential blessing receive from Him. There is no better time than the present.

Holy Spirit, Salvation

Because of Christ we are brand new people. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 Paul says, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! The Holy Spirit lives in us and gives us new life. We are no longer the same. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, or reeducated; we are re-created.

Faith, Forgiveness, Freedom, Love, Salvation

When we try to follow all the rules in order to please God, we fail every time. But there is freedom in the Lord according to 2 Corinthians 3:17, Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. When our trust is in Jesus to save us through His sacrifice on the cross, He removes the heavy burden of trying to follow all the rules and the guilt associated with failing to do so. When we trust in Christ we are accepted, forgiven, and free to live our lives the way God intended because we are loved so dearly by Him.

Grace, Hope, Salvation

Paul paints and interesting picture of Christ in 2 Corinthians 2:14, But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. In the Roman empire, when a general would return from a successful military engagement, the Romans would have a triumphal procession where the general would display his conquered treasures and captives in a cloud of incense offered up to their gods. It was the sweet aroma of victory to the Romans and the smell of slavery and death to the captives. When we preach the gospel, it is good news to some and repugnant to others. Believers recognize the fragrance as life-giving and non-believers are reminded of the hopelessness they live in.
