2016 Day 175 – Acts 20

Obedience, Servant

Most of us, especially Americans, feel life is not successful unless we get a lot out of it. In today’s reading Paul feels what he puts into life is far more important than what he gets out of it. In Acts 20:24 he says, However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace. This life is temporary and we will get very little out of it unless what we put into it is our focus. Nothing is as fulfilling as doing the will of God and knowing it has an eternal impact.

Love, Servant

God does not need us, but He chooses to use us in the fulfillment of His perfect plan and to share His love with the world around us. In 2 Corinthians 5:20 Paul says, We are therefore Christ’s  ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. Just as an ambassador in a foreign land represents the United States and it’s interests, so are we ambassadors of God in this fallen world. Where we belong and who we belong to does not change, but we live here as representatives of Christ.

2016 Day 114 – James 2

Crucifixion, Faith, Salvation, Servant

We do not need to do anything to receive salvation. Christ did it all through His crucifixion on the cross. So what is James trying to say in James 2:26? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead. He is not talking about salvation. He is talking about a changed and obedient life. Christ saves us from our imperfect lives and gives us the freedom to not be enslaved by our sin nature. If we do not take advantage of that freedom to act for the benefit of others, then what was the point of salvation? Freedom gives us the ability to choose a life fulfilled and happy through Christ. If we don’t take advantage of it, we are wasting the gift of salvation.

Blessings, Obedience, Servant

Too often we give too much credit to the person doing God’s work instead of who they are doing it for. In Acts 10:25-26 Peter shows a great example, 25 As Peter entered the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet in reverence. 26 But Peter made him get up, “Stand up,” he said, “I am only a man myself.” Obedience is critically important, but glory must always be give to God. We are all nothing more than men and women who love Jesus and want to spread the good news about Him. This does not make us any more special, just blessed and privileged to be used by Him.

Giving, Sacrifice, Servant

In today’s reading we see a clear example of what we are called to do in Acts 4:32, All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. It is easy to think the apostles were describing something similar to socialism, but it’s not that simplistic. We should recognize that nothing in our possession is our own. We should be willing to use our blessings from God to help. When others are in need we are called to provide; it’s that simple. It’s not a government, social, or economic solution; it’s a spiritual one that comes from a heart of giving.

Eternity, Obedience, Servant

Jesus’ last quote in Matthew 19-20, 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. The Great Commission was stated to the disciples directly, but was meant for all believers. It is not a suggestion, it is a command. But more importantly, it is a privilege to be in God’s will and to be used by Him for an eternal impact. Let us not take it for granted.

Obedience, Servant

Jesus called all of us to take care of each other. When those who need help the most receive it from us, we are helping as though we were helping Christ Himself. Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “The King will reply, ‘ I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'” We are either obedient and do what Jesus asks of us or we are not. There is no misunderstanding because Christ showed us the example of what we are to do. What are we doing differently that separates us from unbelievers?

Faith, Hope, Servant, Truth

Jesus had no time for ritual or anything else that did not have an impact on people directly. Jesus could see the religious leaders wasting their time worried about trivial things while the people around them suffered and lived hopelessly. Jesus could see how they would eventually be passed up because of their stubbornness. In Matthew 21:28-31 He shares the parable of the Two Sons and He finishes with this final statement in verse 31, “I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.” This is a powerful indictment on the religious leaders and how they completely missed the mark on who the Messiah really was and His purpose. Let us not get caught up in the things that do not matter and have no impact on eternity.

Obedience, Servant

Jesus made it very clear in today’s reading you must pick who you will serve. Either you need to look to God and serve Him, or you can look to the desires of this world. In Luke 16:13 Jesus said, “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Jesus is not saying that working to make money is bad, He is saying it is bad when you make money the most important thing in your life. Trying to justify you need to have money to serve God is nothing more than an excuse. God doesn’t need your money, He wants our obedience and willingness to serve with all we have including our most important possession: Time.

Compassion, Goodness, Servant

Actions speak louder than words, but words are powerful just the same. Jesus warns in Matthew 12:37, For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned. In the end, it all matters because of how we affect and influence others. Maya Angelou once said, “People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel.” We always want to be a powerful impact on those around us. Let us strive to be powerful AND positive.
