2015 Day 49 – Luke 12

Glory, Servant

The measure of a good life is not measured by the size of your bank account or the size of your home. Greed is not only a sin, it is also a distraction from making decisions that impact the Kingdom of God versus impacting our own selfish desires. Luke 12:15 says, Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Our worth is not measure by our personal accomplishments, but by the accomplishments that are made by God working through us. Nothing is more important than doing His work and serving others in Jesus name. We must always remember that everything we do should be for God’s glory.

2015 Day 45 – Luke 10

Love, Servant

I cannot help but wonder if God looks down on us and wonder why we choose to worry about the things we do. We spend too much of our time worrying about things that have very little significance in the light of eternity. In today’s reading we see Martha upset with Mary because she chose to sit and listen to Jesus instead of helping her in preparations around her home. In Luke 10:41 Jesus says, “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” If we look carefully, we do not see Jesus telling Martha that she is doing something wrong, just that Mary has chosen something better. While our choices may seem like good things to do, are they the best thing we can do in serving other’s and allowing ourselves to be used by God?

2015 Day 44 – John 9

Love, Salvation, Servant

When Jesus came as the Messiah, he came to turn everything on it’s head from what the religious leaders expected. John 9:39, Jesus said, “For judgement I have come into the world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” What the Pharisees believed about the Messiah was only partially true, but they were so concerned about tradition that they missed the details around who the Messiah would be and His purpose. For us, wasting time working towards perfection and forgetting about taking care of and loving others is not why He came. To be Christ-like does not mean to be perfect, it means servanthood to those who need it the most.

Forgiveness, Sacrifice, Salvation, Servant

In Jesus’ eyes we are all equal. No sin is great than the other and no amount of grace received is in more abundance than any other. The same is true when it comes to our salvation; none of us is greater than any other. Mark 9:35, Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.” Ultimately, none of us is greater than any other. We all deserve death, which should give us a sense of overwhelming gratitude for the level of forgiveness we have all received.

Joy, Sacrifice, Servant

I love reading how Jesus always brought out the least of those in His society. In today’s reading, Jesus made it a point to lift women up from their low status in their society to the point of experiencing joy in fellowship and service with other believers. In today’s reading, Luke even mentions some of them by name. Luke 8:2-3 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. By allowing these women to travel with Him and be a part of His ministry, Jesus showed that all people are equal under God. These women owed a great debt of gratitude to Jesus because he had healed many and even drove out demons from many of them.

Servant, Trust

When we choose to follow Jesus, everything else is less important. Jesus explains this at the end of today’s reading in Matthew 12:48-50 when someone tells Him that His mother and brothers are there to see him, 48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who is my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” While the people in our lives, including family and friends, are important, the work of the kingdom of God is what is really important. For this reason it is important to surround ourselves with people who share our beliefs and a burden for serving God to further the work of His kingdom.

Sacrifice, Servant

In today’s reading, Jesus takes time to praise John the Baptist and to explain how his example as one of the least of us has eternal impact on the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 11:11 says, “I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” While John made himself low among the people of that time, he also showed how greatness comes from that position of lowliness. Our reward here on earth can never compare to the reward we will see in heaven. As we serve, let us serve with eternity in mind.

Obedience, Servant

Jesus’ final command before He left this earth, Matthew 28:19-20, 19 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Jesus’ command to His disciples back then is no less of a command to us today. He saved us so that we could in turn bring glory to the Father by serving Him. He is with us now and forever.

Love, Obedience, Servant

We are supposed to be God’s hands and feet in this life. When we fail to serve God for His glory and His purpose, we fail at our purpose in life. In Matthew 25:40 Jesus says, The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” We are called to serve where service is needed. When we love others through service we bring glory to God and reflect His love on them.

Glory, Goodness, Righteousness, Servant

When asked, Jesus gave the perfect answer to which of the commandments is most important in Mark 12:30-31, 30 Love the Lord you God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these. God’s laws are not hard. They can be boiled down to two simple things; love God and love others. When we love God and genuinely care for others, then you have fulfilled the intent of the Ten Commandments and bring glory to God.
