2014 Day 315 – Luke 10

Servant

I love the note in my Bible describing Luke 10:2, “There is no unemployment in Christian service.” The verse says, He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” There will never be an end to the work needed for God in this world. Let us not sit on the sidelines when there is so much to do in the name of God. Serving and loving others is the perfect reflection of Christ on this world and we should gladly and readily do it.

2014 Day 309 – Mark 9

Back in Jesus’ time, children were often treated as second class citizens. But Jesus used children as an example of service and love to those who needed our help the most. Mark 9:36-37, 36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him by the arm, he said to them, 37 “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.” Jesus’ point was to show that our service to others is a reflection of Christ’s love and service to them. While children can be challenging at times to deal with, they are the ones who benefit from Christ’s love the most by helping them form into who God created them to be.

When in doubt, follow what Jesus did. 1 John 2:5-6 says, 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. To live as Jesus did we must obey His teaching and follow His example of obedience to God and serving people with love and kindness. When in doubt, follow what Jesus did.

2014 Day 127 – 1 Timothy 6

Obedience, Servant

Paul uses very clear words to describe what we as believers should not and then what we should do in 1 Timothy 6:11, But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. We should first of all flee from the things Paul talks about in the previous verses. He then clearly states what we should be pursuing with some very active verbs. Some people may feel the life of a believer is a passive existence that simply waits on God to act on our behalf. However, God expects us to have an active faith; one that pursues obedience for God with courage and doing what is right. Let us not wait on God to act, but actively seek His will and plan for our lives and our role in the life of others.

2014 Day 102 – Acts 24

Obedience, Servant

In Acts 24 we read about Paul’s defense to the Roman governor Felix in regard to the false accusations made by the Jewish leaders. While Paul was unsuccessful in securing a timely release from prison, he was still fully used by God by sharing truths with the Governor during his detainment. Being in those circumstances must have felt daunting at times, but Paul still seized the opportunity to serve God’s purpose. For us, there are times where we feel as though we are in prison because of our circumstances, but these are the times when God has the ability to use us the most if we allow ourselves the be open to His leading in our lives. We must never discount the circumstances that lead us to an opportunity to serve God where we are if we are simply open to His call in our lives.

Servant

God wants each of us to be sacrificial givers, but He also wants us to be willing givers. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. What and how we give is between us and God. He knows what we are able to give and the status of our heart in giving. God does not need us for anything. However, God does give us the privilege of being a part of His plan and for that reason alone we should be thankful to Him for allowing us the honor of being used by Him for the fulfillment of His will.

Knowledge, Servant, Trust, Wisdom

As we end the book of 1 Corinthians, I can not help but notice what a great leader Paul is. He gives very detailed instructions and takes little to no praise for himself. He warns, instructs, and give praise when necessary. To often people get the wrong impression of what leadership looks like. It is not a cheerleader, dictator, tyrant, or manager. Leadership is about equipping others to do the work set before them. Paul realizes his role is not just to do, but to also equip others and future generations to carry out the message of the gospel throughout the world. There are many lessons to be learned here and Paul would be an interesting case study on effective leadership.

Servant

In today’s reading, Paul recounts the ministry he had with the church in Thessalonica. Paul was intentional about his recollection to show the believers the importance of all he had done for them. As an example to us, we must be intentional about how we serve others. This does not happen on its own.

Goodness, Reward, Servant

Doing the right thing never gets old. While the rewards may not always be seen right away, they are always built into the act of goodness. Galatians 6:9 says, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. No matter what the outcome, we must never get tired of doing what is right and good to please God by serving others. Our reward may not be realized in this lifetime, but it will come.

Servant

In today’s reading I found the requirements of the men who led administratively to be interesting because they were not to be taken lightly. These were men who were just as important and committed as the men who were tasked with preaching. Each group allowed the other to serve in a completely committed way. When we are tasked with seemingly menial tasks, we should realize we are just as important as anyone else in ministry. We each have our strengths and calling. We should approach how we serve with the same level of commitment and vigor as anyone else.
