In today’s reading we see Paul being brought up on charges before the Roman leaders. The key take-away is Paul’s confidence in the truth. Paul has no doubt in God’s plan for his life and was willing to die for the truth. When we go beyond trying to be right and trust in the truth, God’s plan and perfect will are always done according to His promises. It is not our job to convince others of the truth; it is our job to present it and stand behind it. God will do the rest.

In today’s reading we see that life does not have to be fair. Paul remains in prison for over two years, not because of his guilt, but because of politics. God never promised us life would be fair, but He does command us to trust in Him. His plan is perfect and in the end He will be glorified His will be done.

We all face fear in life, but we should all face our fears know God is by our side. Paul faced imprisonment and potential death by going to Jerusalem, but he went anyway. Acts 21:13, The Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.” Knowing why we are willing to face persecution and struggles helps us to face our fears, but knowing God is with us through it all, makes it all possible.

God created each of us for a purpose and we have all been given gifts for that purpose. In Romans 12:6-8 Paul encourages us to fully use the gifts we have been given: 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. 7 If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; 8 if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership. let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully. What is important is that God did not give us gifts to be used individually. We are individuals with specific gifts created for the purpose of forming a complete body. We are all members of the Kingdom of God created to glorify Him and bring others closer to a relationship with Him.

How arrogant are we to ever think that God requires anything from us? God gives to us, not the other way around. In Romans 11:35 Paul says, Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him? So many people approach their relationship with God trying to give Him their obedience as payment for salvation. Instead, our obedience is supposed to come as a result of Him giving to us. God requires nothing from us other than our faith and trust in Him.

God chooses each of us to be used according to His will. As the creator of us all it is His prerogative. In Romans 9:21 it is not saying some people are worth more than others: Does  not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use? Paul is simply saying that God, as the creator, has the right to use us uniquely for His purpose. The value of each of us is the same in His eyes.

Even when everything around us seems to be going in the wrong direction, God still uses it to accomplish His good and perfect will in our lives. In Romans 8:28 Paul says, And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him. God is constantly by our side working for the good of each of us. When bad things happen around us, God can use it for our good.

It is hard to think of suffering as a time to rejoice, but Paul says just that in Romans 5:3-4, 3 Not Only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. When we suffer for a righteous cause, it is an opportunity to bring us closer to God. It is also a opportunity to learn and to grow in our faith. Through suffering we are reminded of our need for God, which prepares us for greatest challenges in life.

God’s power is shown most clearly through the sacrifice of Christ for our eternal salvation. In Romans 1:16 Paul addresses the Romans, I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. God loved us so much, despite our sin, He gave us a way to be with Him for eternity. We must never be ashamed of the gift He freely gave.

When we try to battle the world on its terms and on its timing, we lose every time. Paul points out in 2 Corinthians 10:3, For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. Engaging the world in a battle of words or actions, we will ultimately lead to failure every time. We must approach battle in a different way: though prayer and trusting the Lord. We cannot battle on our terms and with our own strength and expect to be victorious. God has the power to win and He deserves all the glory from victory if we just trust in Him.
