I want my life to mean something in the end. I want God to look at me and say I have made Him proud. Paul realized he was reaching the end of his life and in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 says to Timothy, 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day – and not only me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. Paul fought the good fight and prepared the way so that others could do the same. I hope and pray we all follow the same path as Paul. It is difficult, but through God’s grace and the Holy Spirit’s leading, we can do it.

God’s word is important to me. It is the reason I try to spend at least a few minutes in it 6 days a week. But if I don’t believe it is God’s words coming through human authors, then it’s just another book. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Paul is very specific, 16 All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped  for every good work. You can choose to believe this is God breathing His words through the authors of His word, or you can choose to reject it. But in the end, these words are the foundation of our faith, which ironically requires faith to believe.

Faith, Leadership, Trust

Today we begin the second letter from Paul to Timothy. The letter was written to give final instructions and encouragement to Timothy, the pastor of the church at Ephesus. In 2 Timothy 1:7 Paul says, For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of Power, of love and of self-discipline. This is sound advice and gives three characteristics of effective Christian leadership: power, love, and self-discipline. These characteristics are available to us because of the Holy Spirit living in us. By following the Holy Spirit’s leading in us, we grow to display these characteristics more each day.

We have all heard God being called “the light of the world”. But God is not a flame coming from a small candle in the middle of a room. Hebrews 12:29 says, For our God is a consuming fire. He is much more like a raging fire that is beyond our control. We cannot force God to comply with our will, we must allow ourselves to be consumed by His. Let us not put our confidence in the things that are destroyed by the fire, but instead let us build our life on Christ and His unshakable foundation.

Faith, Trust

In Hebrews 11:1 faith is described as follows: Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Faith in God begins by believing in His character – He is who He says. The rest comes from believing he will fulfill His promises – He will do exactly what He says He will do. When we believe even when we don’t see the path clearly, we demonstrate true faith.

Salvation, Trust

The original covenant God had made with Abraham and later fully articulated with Moses and Aaron, was meant to be temporary. It was not perfect and required a lot of intervention from the High Priest. Hebrews 8:7 says, For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. Jesus fixed it by becoming the perfect High Priest for us. When we have faith in Him, He automatically intercedes on our behalf. The new covenant is perfect.

We will always feel contentment when we are walking in God’s will. In 1 Timothy 6:6 Paul says, But godliness with contentment is great gain. When we follow God’s leading, it does not necessarily bring us happiness, but it does bring about contentment. Being a believer is not always easy, but it will always fulfill us to know we are not alone and have God by our side.

Having a pure life requires constant care. In 1 Timothy 4:16 Paul warns Timothy, Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. We must be constantly on guard to watch against sin that can ultimately destroy us. We must also watch what we believe just as carefully and not allow society to dictate what is right versus wrong. When we look to God as our compass, He will never lead us down the wrong path.

Integrity, Love, Servant, Trust

In today’s reading, Paul talks about church leadership and what is required. The first verse sums it all up in 1 Timothy 3:1, Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Church (people, not the building) leadership is a big responsibility because we serve as God’s representative. It is not a popularity contest. It requires strength of character, integrity, and most of all, a commitment to love others and serve God wholeheartedly.

Life is hard! And sometimes it’s just difficult to be happy about the difficulties of life. But in Philippians 4:4 Paul is clear about how we are to handle the difficulties of this life, Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! This is easier said that done, but God’s commands are clear and He is the one who gives us the strength to rejoice if we simply trust in Him. We are never alone. God is always by our side.
