2015 Day 20 – Luke 7

Obedience, Trust

When we realize how much God has forgiven us of our sin, it is easy to have an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all He has done. Conversely, when we rely on our own strength for obedience and righteousness we fail to fully see God’s presence in our lives. In today’s reading we clearly see the contrast of the two as a sinful woman overwhelmingly shows Christ her gratitude while the Pharisees feel entitled to being in Christ’s presence. In response to this Jesus says in Luke 7:47, “Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven – for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little love little.” It’s not that the Pharisees were less sinful in God’s eyes, it is that the Pharisees were less sinful in their own eyes. For this reason they failed to fully see God’s necessity in their lives. Let us always remember how much we need God, and therefore, pursue Him even more each day.

2015 Day 19 – Matthew 8

Faith, Healing, Trust

One of the most beautiful interaction Jesus had with the sick, in my opinion, was the one at the beginning of Matthew 8. The man with leprosy asks Jesus to heal him if He is willing and Jesus answers with a simple reply in verse 3, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man, “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. Jesus was so loving and willing to help anyone who had faith to believe in Him. The same applies to us today. When we believe in Jesus, anything is possible. We are not guaranteed anything will happen, but all things are possible.

Obedience, Relationship, Trust

Our reward for obedience and our relationship with God does not come in this lifetime. Our reward comes in heaven. In Matthew 6:19-20 Jesus said, 19 Do not store up for yourself treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. When we worry about the things of this life we hold ourselves back from looking forward to our true reward in heaven and we limit our effectiveness for the glory of God.

Obedience, Trust

Today, as we finish up our 2014 reading plan, we find Jesus appearing to the disciples with His final instructions. I found it interesting that in the beginning of this final chapter in John, Peter went back to what he knew; fishing. It was there that Jesus first found Peter and it is there that Jesus shows Peter that He was the same from before the crucifixion. After an entire fishing trip with nothing to show for it, Jesus commands them to put down their nets on the other side; just like He did when they first met. And like the first time, they experience amazing results. While our circumstances may change, Jesus is the same now as He has ever been. We can count on the stability He brings no matter what this life throws at us. We must all try to remember this as we begin 2015. Happy New Year!!!

Joy, Trust

Call me sappy, but I just love watching videos of family members being surprised by the return of military service men and women. The joy they experience when they encounter their loved ones after a long time away. Similarly, as we read John 20, I cannot help but imagine the emotions going through Mary’s mind as she realizes it really is Jesus. John 20:16, Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). The picture of this scene reminds me of what our first moments in heaven will be like. We hang on tightly to the things of this world because we simply cannot imagine what is waiting for us when we see Jesus for the first time.

Trust, Truth

Jesus never once shied away from the truth or the fate set before Him for His life based on that truth. John 18:37 says, “You are like a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” It seems to me that even Pilate recognized Jesus was telling him the truth. Unfortunately, it also seems as though Pilate chose to reject the truth. When we reject the truth and choose to follow our own desires, we fail. We must always look to the truth and act according to what is real and what is right.

Trust

When Jesus was crucified, Mark 15:26 says, The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS. While the sign was meant to describe why Jesus was being crucified, it was also meant to mock Him. In the end, however, the sign could not have been more accurate. The only reason they chose to kill Jesus was because He WAS the king and this was His purpose. Nothing that God ever does is an accident. This includes everything that happened in the Bible and it also includes everything that happens in each of our lives. Trust God for His plan and doing all things according to His perfect plan.

Don’t let current hardship dictate who you are. Often, our struggles in this life prepare us for lessons we learned in order to accomplish extraordinary things later on.

The parable of the King’s Ten Servants in today’s reading is sometimes used to talk about money and using it to further the Kingdom. And while money could be one of the gifts God gives us, it is more about fully using any of God’s gifts. The parable is summed up in Luke 19:26, He replied, ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but as for the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away.’ If we want to see the Kingdom of God grow and we trust in Him, then we must be faithful to use the gifts He has given us.

Faith, Righteousness, Salvation, Thanksgiving, Trust

The contrast of the two men in the parable of the “Two Men Praying” in Luke 18:9-14 was very apparent. The first man was proud of the accomplishments he had done for the Lord, but God wants us to come to him humbly knowing we are unable to be perfectly righteous without Him. Matthew 18:13 depicts the second man, a tax collector, and how he approached the presence of God. But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God have mercy on me, a sinner.’ Without God’s mercy and grace we are nothing more than a common sinner and we are unable to attain enough righteousness to fulfill any of the requirements needed to be in God’s presence. Let us be thankful on this Thanksgiving Day for God’s provision of eternal life through His precious gift of Jesus Christ His Son.
