2013 Day 315 – John 4-6, Psalm 137

Faith, Trust

At the end of John 4, I always love reading about the faith of the government official. Though he was more than a day’s travel away from confirming whether his son was healed, he still went away with the faith that Jesus would heal his son. So many times when we ask God for something, we want immediate confirmation that He has or will take care of it. We need to be more willing to walk away knowing God will take care of our needs in His timing and according to His will.

2013 Day 307 – Ezekiel 27-30, Psalm 127

Trust

In today’s reading we continue to see God’s judgment against those who are against Him. I have often wondered the purpose of these types of passages in the Bible. They always seem so depressing and paint such a harsh picture of our loving God. But when I realize this is God’s way of comforting His people, it makes more sense. When we look at the injustices of this evil world, it is easy to wonder where God is. However, when we see that God will ultimately be known and the evil will be punished, we can relax and know God’s timing is perfect and there is purpose in His timing. We must trust in Him and know He has it under control.

Healing, Trust

God’s ability to restore is beyond our comprehension. Forests burn to the ground and are able to grow back. Bones break and are able to heal. The same can be said for times of sorrow in our lives. Psalm 126:5 says, Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. 6 Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. We may feel the pain and sorrow of loss or from someone who has hurt us, but God will heal us over time. We must trust God to restore us in the end.

Through Christ we can thrive under pressure. When we realize our weakness, we look to Christ for our strength. I hope this video encourages you and helps you see how God’s strength can give us everything we need in our weakness.

2013 Day 302 – Unforgettable

Compassion, Love, Peace, Trust

Three years ago this past Saturday, my dad passed away from a relatively short battle with cancer. While both of my parents have always meant a lot to me, I always credit my dad for making me the man that I am today. The memory of his life is always one of respected and honor. But the memory of his last year with us is painful. To watch this man suffer and experience the tremendous amounts of pain he endured burns sadness in my heart.

The day before the anniversary of his death, I came across a post on Facebook with the following article. It painted, in pictures, the journey one man took watching his wife succumb to breast cancer. In the three years since my dad’s death, I have never found a closer representation (though far from exact) of what we went through watching my dad suffer. The author warns of the last three pictures, not because of anything graphic, but because he said “the last 3 photos destroyed me”. It destroyed me too.

This Guy’s Wife Got Cancer, So He Did Something Unforgettable. The Last 3 Photos Destroyed Me.

Comfort, Compassion, Trust

Even when we are in the middle of trials in our lives, God is our sanctuary. In Ezekiel 11:16 it says, “Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Although I sent them far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries, yet for a little while I have been a sanctuary for them in the countries where they have gone.’” No matter how dark it seems, God is with us and looks to be the place we can go to find comfort. I would imagine people who are imprisoned for their faith finding God to be their sanctuary when they face torture and confinement. I too often find myself waiting too long to find comfort from God. He wants to be there for me throughout and I need to trust in Him immediately instead of waiting. God is my comforter and in Him is where my trust should be.

Protection, Trust

The people of Judah trusted in their abilities, prosperity and possessions instead of God. Because of this, God allowed them to be destroyed on the basis of their trust. Ezekiel 7:8 says, I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you. I will judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable practices. When we trust in our careers, family, friends, the economy, government or military for our security, we put God as a backup. We are to put God first and foremost as our protector and guide in all we do.

Trust

Trust is a difficult thing. It requires us to humble ourselves into allowing someone else to care for us. The same applies to trusting in God with all our needs. When we attempt to do it all on our own it creates anxiety and stress in our lives. 1 Peter 5:7 says, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. When we carry all the stresses and worries by ourselves, we show we do not fully trust God with our lives. Sometimes we think the struggles cause by our own sin and foolishness are not concerns of God. But when we turn our trust over to God, He will even bear the burden of carrying the burden from that anxiety as well.

Compassion, Faith, Trust

God is God! He created us and brought our lives into existence. Who are we to question His sovereign will for our lives and the lives of those around us. Isaiah 29:16 says, You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? Our job is to obey and be available for His calling on our lives. He ultimately has what is best for us in His mind. We must trust that even if it is not in this lifetime, His will, in the end, will save us. Lamentations 3:22-23 says it best, 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. God’s faithfulness never fails. It is our faith in Him that we should be concerned with most.

Obedience, Sacrifice, Trust

Today we finish up the book of Jeremiah. While it has not been an easy book to read, we must remember this book is not just about God’s judgement, but about God’s control over everything. When we think the whole world is falling apart around us, we must acknowledge that God is not surprised by any of it.

It is also important to realize that Jeremiah was unsuccessful in the eyes of everyone around him. He prophesied the destruction of the nation of Israel and yet no one listened to him. But in the end, his prophesies came true and he did exactly what God asked him to do. While the world’s definition of success may not show our lives as successful, we must look to God and His definition of success for our lives.
