2013 Day 95 – Joshua 1-3, Psalm 52

Obedience, Trust

Today we begin the book of Joshua. This is one of my favorite books of the Old Testament. There is a lot of drama and there are many lessons we can learn. One of the things that always stands out to me in this book is how God uses everything to fulfill His plan. The bottom line is that God doesn’t really need us; He chooses to use us. In these first few chapters God even uses a prostitute to fulfill His plan. The point I’m trying to make is He doesn’t need us to be perfect or holy or clean, smart, or even called. He simply wants us to be obedient and willing to be used in any way He asks.

Disciple, Obedience, Trust

As we watch decisions unfold around us by the leaders of this country and the world, it is easy to forget who is the leader of them all. Psalm 47:8-9 says, 8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. 9 The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted. While we should not ignore what happens around us and sit idly by, we must remember that God is not blinded by any of it. In the end, His righteousness will prevail. Let us not allow ourselves to be hung up on individual issues around us, but let us focus on God’s kingdom and our mission to share the message of Christ. We should also keep in mind that the Great Commission did not include the title of “Judges of the Earth”. Matthew 28:19-20 simply states what our role should be, 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

2013 Day 86 – Deuteronomy 20-22, Psalm 46

Faith, Obedience, Trust

As we read all of these individual laws, I can’t help but notice how many of these commands are common sense to us today. God does not give us laws to punish, but to protect. Yes, He wants obedience, but like a father to his children, He wants nothing more than to protect and give what is best for us. When we choose to disobey sound instruction from our Heavenly Father, we place ourselves in the presence of potential danger. Let us not ignore God, but let us obey Him and His commands because He knows what is best for us.

Faith, Power, Trust

Today we begin the book of Deuteronomy. Much of this book is a summary of where the Israelites have been. God uses Moses to remind the Israelites of all the blessings He has provided and to encourage them to rededicate their lives to Him. God also uses this book to give assurances to the people that He will be with them as they take possession of the promised land. This is a good reminder to us and we should review all the things God has done in our past to lead us to where we are today. Whether it is good or bad our experiences, blessings, and trials are what have shaped us into who we are today. Be thankful for your past and use it as a reminder of God’s provision for the future.

2013 Day 71 – Numbers 22-24, Psalm 34

Obedience, Trust

You can’t help but laugh a little when you read the interaction between Balaam and his donkey in Numbers 22:28-33, 28 Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth, and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?” 29 Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.” 30 The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?” “No,” he said. 31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown. 32 The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me. 33The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now, but I would have spared it.” The lesson for us in this reading is that God will open up our eyes when necessary, but we need to be aware of the way situations open and close for us. When there is a blocked path in front of us and all we want to do is plow through it, we should pay attention to why it is there. We need to trust in God’s leading no matter how much it may not make sense to us.

Obedience, Protection, Trust

We are now approaching the Israelite’s first attempt to cross into the promised land. Though we know how this will turn out, it is important to see where the Israelites went wrong. Ultimately, it was not because they were afraid; fear is a normal human emotion. They failed because they didn’t trust in the creator of the universe. If we look at Numbers 10:35, Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, “Rise up, O Lord ! May your enemies be scattered; may your foes flee before you.” Moses knew God’s power and understood God needed to lead them in all they set out to do. This is a lesson to us all. We cannot expect to be victorious in all God has asked us to do if we don’t put God up in front of our lives. We must start by placing God in front of every step. This sounds impossible, but God never asked for perfection, He asked for obedience.

Trust

In reading Psalm 29 we see David describing how might God’s voice is. By His mighty voice all things were created and all things are under His control. When things seem the most out of control we must remember that God has the power to do things differently if He ever chooses. We must trust in Him to know He has purpose in His perfect plan for us.

Courage, Trust

Today we start the exciting book of Numbers. Ok, I’ll be honest, it probably won’t be that exciting unless you think balancing your checkbook is the highlight of your week. However, we must keep in mind the purpose of the book, which was to show the precision by which God would prepare the Israelites to enter the promised land. In this book we will also see the disobedience by the Israelites when they show a lack of faith by not entering the promised land because of fear. God punishes them for their disobedience by making them wait another 40 years. The thing to remember is God has a perfect plan for each of us. If we lack courage to move forward it is because of us, not God. We must always look to Him and know He is always with us. Just like we read yesterday in the book of Hebrews, He is the same yesterday today and tomorrow. We are the ones who change, not Him.

2013 Day 54 – Leviticus 9-11, Proverbs 15:1-17

Knowledge, Trust

Today’s reding in Leviticus focuses on cleanliness. What is amazing to me is how much care God took to keep the Israelites save. In our modern world, we can see why we need to stay away from certain types of food, or at least be careful in how we prepare it. But the Israelites had to have faith and trust that God had a purpose for His commands. We must do the same thing. When God commands us to stay away from certain things, we must trust Him to know what is best for us. It may not make sense, but He sees the big picture much better than we could ever could.

Healing, Love, Mercy, Peace, Trust

For our reflection day this week, I came across another great Skit Guys video. This one had me laughing the whole time… right up until the last minute and a half of the video. It is 12:32 in length, but it is worth the effort to watch the whole thing. Unfortunately, the video is not on YouTube yet so I could not embed it below, but I have shared the link to their site so you can view the video there. Please come back here and share your thoughts. As always, I would love to read them.
