Truth is not based on emotion. We can all get caught up in the emotions of a moment and feel strongly it is based on truth. But emotions can lead us to inaccurate beliefs. In Titus 2:1 Paul says, You must teach what is according with sound doctrine. Sound doctrine comes from the Bible and the Holy Spirit living in us to help us interpret was is true. While church leaders are there to help guide us, it is up to each of us to listen to the God through the Holy Spirit revealing truth to us.

Righteousness, Trust, Truth

Today we begin Paul’s letter to Titus who was one of the church leaders on the island of Crete. The purpose of this letter was to advise Titus of his responsibilities and to teach him. In Titus 1:15 Paul warns Titus of people whose lives are so corrupt they cannot see the truth: To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupt. These people are unable to see the difference between right and wrong. Sadly, they attempt to justify their behavior and make good people out to be the ones who are wrong. If we look around, and are honest with ourselves, we see these people all around us today in our current world. Be aware of them and do not allow them to persuade you that you are doing something wrong in your righteousness.

2016 Day 214 – Philippians 3

Righteousness, Truth

Just because something sounds good, moral, and/or ethical does not mean it is. Unless we are willing to take the time and compare what we hear to God’s truth, then we are destined to be deceived by what this world has to teach us. In Philippians 3:2 Paul warns us, Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those manipulators of the flesh. We hear it all the time in the media when people talk about tolerance. Tolerance has a broad appeal which, if we allow, has the potential to lead us to accept even the things God has clearly said were wrong. The best way to mitigate deception is to take it to the source of truth. If you believe the Bible, then you have already have access to the truth.

Faith, Trust, Truth

In today’s reading we see Paul being brought up on charges before the Roman leaders. The key take-away is Paul’s confidence in the truth. Paul has no doubt in God’s plan for his life and was willing to die for the truth. When we go beyond trying to be right and trust in the truth, God’s plan and perfect will are always done according to His promises. It is not our job to convince others of the truth; it is our job to present it and stand behind it. God will do the rest.

Love, Truth

Today we read about Paul and his dispute with the Sanhedrin, which were the religious leaders in Jerusalem made up of Pharisees and Sadducees. Paul was able to use their differences in belief to divide them and cause confusion among themselves. The unfortunate thing is that the same thing happens to our modern day Christian church. We have allowed ourselves to focus on items that mean little in the light of eternity. It divides us instead of unite us in the eyes of the world. If we look to God and understand our instructions are simply to love Him and love others, our lives would be much simpler and the world would be drawn more to what God has to offer. We are here to share God’s love, not His judgement.

Faith, Love, Truth

Today we have reached the end of the book of Romans. Paul takes the time to send greetings to several people and to thank them for their service. Paul also takes the opportunity to warn believers of those who choose to bring divisiveness into their midst. In Romans 16:17-18 Paul warns, 17 I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause division and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. 18 For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people. When someone brings teachings and ideas that are contrary to the teachings of Christ, we should question them. Christ kept it pretty simple; Love God and love others. If it deviates away from this “golden Rule”, then we can be certain it comes from the mouths of men and not from God.

Salvation, Trust, Truth

God’s power is shown most clearly through the sacrifice of Christ for our eternal salvation. In Romans 1:16 Paul addresses the Romans, I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. God loved us so much, despite our sin, He gave us a way to be with Him for eternity. We must never be ashamed of the gift He freely gave.

Truth, Wisdom

It is easy to base our knowledge of Christ on what we see in other believers. But Paul is clear to the Corinthian church when they look to him as the holy example in 1 Corinthians 1:13, Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? Let us always be clear when it comes to who we worship. There are many great men and women who love and follow Christ, and they are great examples, but they are still flawed human beings. Let us not take our eyes off of Christ who is our one perfect and true example.

Truth

Paul gave a great example of how to work with people who are non-believers. When the city clerk in today’s reading tried to quiet the angry crowds, he made a very interesting comment in Acts 19:37, You have brought these men here, though they have neither robbed temples nor blasphemed our goddess. Paul did not have to be rude or disrespectful of the beliefs of other people. He allowed the gospel to speak for itself. It is, however, interesting how much of a reaction the Gospel always creates even in today’s world. It has the power to change everything, which scares everyone.

Grace, Mercy, Salvation, Truth

After everything Christ had done and everything the disciples tried to do to bring the Jews into believing Christ was the Messiah and savior of the world, they still rejected the truth. In Acts 18:6 Paul says, But when the Jews opposed Paul and became abusive, he shook out his clothes in protest and said to them, “Your blood be on you own heads! I am clear of my responsibility. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.” It is because the Jews thoroughly rejected Christ that Paul finally decided to fully concentrate on reaching the Gentile. It is because of this that the rest of the world found Jesus. The Roman Empire (aka Gentiles) became the perfect vehicle to spread the Gospel throughout the rest of the world. It may not have always been pretty, but it was effective and something we should all be thankful for because ultimately it reach us.
