2015 Day 90 – John 19

Truth

The sign Pilate had placed on the cross of Jesus read, JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. This was not by accident, just as nothing in God’s perfect plan is ever an accident. The Jewish leaders wanted the sign to read that He claimed to be the king of the Jews, but in John 19:22, Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.” While Pilate did not change the sign because he was probably just being stubborn, this was all part of God’s plan to make sure all who witnessed the crucifixion Christ knew they were killing the King, the highest and holiest they had ever known.

2015 Day 89 – John 18

Obedience, Truth

As we approach Easter, we are now reading about the final moments of Jesus’ life here on earth. Jesus’ life and death have significance in all he accomplished. Even in His private conversation with Pilate, Jesus reflected the truth of who He was and all He had done. I found it interesting in the beginning of John 18:38 when Pilate says, “What is truth?” In the Roman government of that time (much like has become for us today) “truth” was whatever the majority of people agreed for it to be. When there is no basis for truth, there is no basis for moral right and wrong. Jesus’ words and actions are the basis for our standard of truth and our moral behavior.

Eternity, Truth

Jesus has been around since the beginning. And while we all tend to focus on the destruction of morals in our society, we forget this is no surprise to the creator of the universe. When this world burns away, He will still exist and be unchanged by any of it. In Matthew 24:35 Jesus says, Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. You cannot change the truth. You can try to deny or ignore it, but truth remains forever.

Trust, Truth

No matter how smart we think we are, we will never outsmart the Creator of the Universe. While the religious leaders never accepted that Jesus was who He claimed to be, they instead chose to give up trying and simply reject Him. At the end of the chapter, in Matthew 22:46, it says, No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. Jesus made it clear back then, as He does today, and yet people still choose to reject the truth.

Believer, Salvation, Truth

When Jesus came to earth, He made it clear that He did not come to judge it, but to bring salvation to those who believed. John 12:47 says, “As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.” Judgement comes from the Father. Jesus came to save by covering all our sin through His sacrifice on the cross. But if Jesus is rejected, then the Father has no choice but to judge those who do not believe by their own merits. Ultimately, the choice is ours.

2015 Day 60 – J.I. Packer: Taking God Seriously

Faith, Obedience, Truth

I found this clip by J.I. Packer very interesting and accurate. The church is becoming something it was never intended to become. It’s supposed to be about bringing us into a true relationship with God and to truly know Him. Unfortunately, in many cases, we are failing.

Faith, resurrection, Trust, Truth

Most people can only believe when they see physical evidence. It is one of the reasons why some have a hard time believing in who Jesus is. But this is where faith comes in. In Matthew 16:4 Jesus said, A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. Jesus then left them and went away. Jesus used Jonah as an example of resurrection since Jonah was swallowed by a fish for 3 days just as Jesus would later be resurrected after 3 days. Jesus gave the people around Him plenty of information and signs about who He was and what He would do. But without ears to hear and a heart that is willing to believe, they missed the truth, just as people still miss the truth today.

Truth

Hypocrisy is pretending to be something you are not and have no intention of ever being. And just like our churches today, the Pharisees of Jesus’ day were no different. Mark 7:6-7, 6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: ” ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’ “ There is a great note in my Bible that states: “We become hypocrites when we (1) pay more attention to reputation than character, (2) carefully follow certain religious practices while allowing our hearts to remain distant from God, and (3) emphasize our virtues but ‘others’ sin.”

Faith, Truth

The more we love this life and cling to the rewards it gives to us, the more we come to realize how empty those rewards really are. In Matthew 10:39 Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” When we cling to the things of this world, we risk forfeiting all that God has promised to us in this life and the next. The best way to enjoy this life is to loosen our grasp on it and turn over control to Christ. The quicker we realize it is all for His glory, the happier we will be.

Holy Spirit, Jesus, Truth

People can deny the existence of God, but the truth is apparent even to the demons. In today’s reading Jesus encounters a legion of demons who have possessed a man and even they know who Jesus is. Mark 5:6-7, 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won’t torture me!” Later on in the New Testament in James 2:19, James states, You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that–and shudder. Belief in God or the denial of His existence does not matter. We can intellectualize reality all we want, but the truth will never change; God exists today and He is working all around us through Jesus Christ His Son and the Holy Spirit in our lives.
