2014 Day 34 – Acts 18

Disciples, Knowledge, Wisdom

My apologies for missing yesterday. It doesn’t happen very often, but yesterday was just one of those days. Today there will be two posts to catch up.

Today we read Acts 18. The biggest thing that stood out to me was discipleship and how one person poured into another and in turn they poured into someone else. Paul spent time with Aquila and Priscilla, who in turn spent time with Apollos. This is how true spiritual growth and learning really happens. We should always spend time learning from more mature believers than ourselves and teaching others who are younger in the faith. We are not expected to know it all, but we are expected to be available to be led by the Holy Spirit for the benefit of others.

2013 Day 362 – Revelation 21-22, Isaiah 66

Knowledge, Obedience, Trust, Wisdom

Today is our final reading for 2013 and it is also the completion of our read through the entire Bible. Revelation 21:6 is a great culmination of what we’ve read this year. He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. I am so thankful to everyone who participated in reading this year. It was a great accomplishment to read the entire Bible with you this year. Few have attempted this and even few have accomplished it.

Next year we will change things up and probably slow things down a bit. I will most likely combine last year’s process of reading the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs with this year’s reflection day each Sunday to allow us time to reflect on the previous week’s reading and give time to catch up if you fall behind.

My friend Sarah also suggested some topical readings which we can certainly combine into our plan if we are only reading one chapter instead of 4-5 chapters per day. I will post this year’s plan by December 31st. In the meantime, we will have reflection posts for the last three days of 2013. May you and your family have a blessed New Year!

2013 Day 297 – Ezekiel 1-4, Isaiah 35

Knowledge, Salvation, Wisdom

Today we begin the book of Ezekiel who was a younger contemporary of Jeremiah. While Jeremiah ministered to the people while they were still in Judah, Ezekiel prophesied to the people who were already exiled to Babylon. He was taken there in 597 B.C. and the book was written approximately 571 B.C. The purpose of the book was to once again announce judgement on Israel and other nations. The book also takes part in announcing salvation to God’s people. Like God’s people back in Ezekiel’s day, we are never without explanation and direction. We just need to choose to follow God’s instruction.

Wisdom

Sorry for the late post today. It’s been a bit of a crazy day.

The verse that stood out to me today is Job 28:20 which says, Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell? People who do not understand the wisdom God has to offer spend much of their time seeking wisdom in earthly things. They can never find true wisdom until they look to God and His words to gain true understanding.

Courage, Faith, Trust, Wisdom

Esther is an amazing woman. Her beauty and character won the heart of the Persian King. She combined courage and careful planning to accomplish what needed to be done. She was open to advice and willing to act. And while she initially hesitated, she showed courage in recognizing she would have to risk her own safety in order to protect others. In Esther 4:14 it says, For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” She realized God had placed her in a position where she could make a difference. It is important to remember that having courage is important, but it does not replace the need for careful planning led by the Holy Spirit.

Forgiveness, Grace, Obedience, Relationship, Wisdom

We have talked before about the significance of seemingly minor decisions having a major impact in future events. Today, we read once again about a minor issue in the life of Solomon that would later have a major impact on his life. I am talking about his wife, Pharaoh’s daughter. While on the surface this may not register as an issue, the reality is that her presence in Solomon’s life would eventually cause him to turn away from God. Pharaoh’s daughter was not the only catalyst, but it was one of the circumstances that caused Solomon to be lost for a portion of his life. Through God’s grace he would eventually turn his life around, but not before it made a significant impact on his life. The lesson for us is to be aware of seemingly innocent decisions we make and understand the potential impact it can have on our lives. We must always have our eyes fixed on our relationship with God and allow Him and the Holy Spirit to guide us in every decision we make. He will never steer us in the wrong direction.

Wisdom

It always impresses me that Solomon asked God for wisdom above all else. With wisdom, Solomon was able to accomplish more that any man had ever been able or since. God blessed him beyond measure because he looked first to having the proper tools rather than being given what most people think they want. We must focus on what we need to serve God as opposed to what we think we want in order to serve him. In the end, all we really need is the power, protection, and will of God to accomplish mighty things.

2013 Day 207 – 1 Corinthians 3-5, Psalm 97

Wisdom

In today’s reading, 1 Corinthians 3:18-20 stood out to me. 18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; 20 and again, “The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile.” Wisdom is not a bad thing. But when wisdom keeps us from faith and trusting in God, it keeps us from experiencing God’s power in our lives. We must remember God is the one who gave us wisdom in the first place. Never mistaken our wisdom as something we earned or deserved. It is God given.

Believer, Wisdom

We need to take time to stop and think. There is so much more to life than just going through the motions. This 15 minute video helped me realize I don’t always look at life through the proper lens. Hope you enjoy it.

Eternity, Reward, Wisdom

At the end of our lives, no matter how great our accomplishments, we are all left to the same fate. I heard it once said this way, “None of us get out of this life alive.” In Ecclesiastes 2:15 Solomon says, Then I said to myself, “The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?” I said to myself, “This too is meaningless.” The only thing that matters in this life is the way we impact eternity and others. Everything else is fleeting and will matter very little once we are gone from this earth.
