Wisdom

I often think, “if I only had more money…”, but money is not the answer for all we need. If we are not careful we can spend our entire lives chasing riches instead of chasing after what God wants for our lives. Verses 4-5 says, Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. Money has a funny way of disappearing before we are able to spend it on things that matter for eternity. We must deliberately think about spending our resources on what’s important or in the end there is nothing left.

Wisdom

We know verse 17 is true, but it is a good reminder, Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach. All the wisdom we will ever need is found in the Bible. we just need to read, study, and apply it to ours lives. I know, I know… Much easier said than done, but it’s at least a roadmap for our lives.

Wisdom

Passages in the Bible reminding me to keep silent are great are of great use to me. Verse 28 reminds me that wisdom does not always come from saying the right things; sometimes it’s simply saying nothing at all, Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

Wisdom

God wants us to be doers, not talks. Nothing good comes from talking about a good idea until we actually do something. Verse 23 says, All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. If all we ever do is talk about serving other, no one is ever really helped. It is better to go out and do something, than to wait until it is the perfect plan. There is only one perfect plan and it comes straight from God.

Wisdom

Today, verse 20 in Proverbs 13 that stood out to me, He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. Surround yourself with wise people so that you may grow wise. I try to surround myself with friends who will help me grow and not lead me into harm. They are not perfect, but their wisdom is extremely is more valuable to me their their perfection.

Wisdom

Right off the bat in verse 1, Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid. Don’t be stupid! Being able to take correction is a form of discipline because it takes a disciplined heart and mind to understand that correction makes us stronger. In verse 15 it is rephrased in softer terms, The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice. Don’t be the smartest guy in the room. I always like to say that if I’m the smartest guy in the room, we are all in big trouble! I always want to surround myself with wise counsel that can help me make wiser decisions than I could have made on my own.

Knowledge, Wisdom

Today we are back in the book of Proverbs. We will be here for the next couple of weeks. In Proverbs 10 there is a lot of great comparisons and examples of good living versus bad. For today, I am picking verse 14 as my verse for the day, Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. I am constantly working on remembering to choose my words carefully. As a leader at work and at home I must remember the impact my mouth can have on others and how it reflects on me and my level of wisdom.

Knowledge, Wisdom

From now on when someone asks me why we do this blog I’m going to point them to Romans 15:4, For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. The knowledge of scripture and understanding the history behind it affects our attitude toward our present and future. The more we know and understand about what God has done in the past, the more confidence we will have in what He will do about our future. Being diligent about reading God’s word increases our trust in God’s perfect plan and will for our lives.

Repentance, Wisdom

When we let a little sin into our lives we run the risk of affecting the rest of our lives as well. Verse 7 says it best, Your boasting is not good. Don’t you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? We need to be diligent to avoid the things that can cause small cracks in our armor. The small cracks can turn into big ones, which ultimately affect our entire lives. We will never be perfect, but we need to do all that we can to protect ourselves from allowing even small acts of disobedience turing into perpetual sin in our lives.

Holy Spirit, Wisdom

I always like to tell people that if I am ever the smartest guy in the room we are all in big trouble. I am not trying to be clever, I’m just being honest about my limitations on an intellectual level. The same thing applies to my spiritual life. I will never be the smartest on in the room when it comes to understanding and being able to explain God’s Word and the spiritual importance of His message. The good news is that I don’t have to be a genius. In verse 12 it says, We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. God’s Holy Spirit helps us to understand all that we need to know. Even Paul, who was a pretty smart and well educated fellow, understood the importance of allowing God to be the message and not our own understanding. Paul expresses this in verses 4-5, 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power. The important thing to me in these verses is how Paul makes sure that men’s wisdom rests solely on God’s power.
