2012 Day 169 – 1 Corinthians 1

Power, Relationship, Wisdom

God has more power and more wisdom than we could ever hope to have. In verse 25 it says, For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength. Paul wrote this verse because he had just previously talked about how the Jews needed miracles and the Greeks needed wisdom to believe. God is not in the business of performing for us in order to prove himself to us. He is in the business of meeting us where we need Him. He is all the power and wisdom that I need and I can see that more and more each day as I build my relationship with Him.

Holy Spirit, Wisdom

We are finally in Acts; the foundational actions of the apostles that formed our faith. Everything that the Christian “church” would become has it’s origins here. The key verse in this first chapter is found in verse 8, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” After Jesus is taken up into heaven, the baptism of the Holy Spirit would bring the helper and leader they all needed. As for me, I don’t know what I would do if it weren’t for the Holy Spirit. I know with the Holy Spirit I have all I need to guide me, love me, and provide for me in everything I do.

Wisdom

Verses 8 and 9 stood out to me today, 8 Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you. 9 Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning. Simply put, I want to be the type of man who can receive instruction and teaching from others. I never want to be the man who feels like he can’t be taught by others. You are never too old to learn something new. And you certainly are never to old to make a mistake and need correction. None of us are perfect and through the Holy Spirit we can all help lead and instruct one another.

Wisdom

Verse 11 stood out to me today, for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. There is nothing more precious than wisdom that comes from God. There are many things we may desire, but without wisdom and the knowledge of what to do with our desires, it will lack value. We must seek God’s wisdom to fully appreciate and use the gifts He has given us.

Wisdom

Today is our 100th day of the year! Thank you to everyone who has stuck with the process and have joined us in our reading this year.

Today’s reading in Proverbs 6 has some great words of wisdom. My favorite passage is in verses 9-11, How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. This passage applies to so much of our lives in regard to staying focused on the the task at hand. We can not afford to lose sight of what is important; whether it is our spiritual, physical, or emotional lives. All it takes is a moment of weakness to bring it all crashing down.

Knowledge, Wisdom

While knowledge is important, wisdom is the key to making knowledge matter in our lives. In verse 10 it says, For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. It isn’t until wisdom enters our lives that knowledge becomes useful for us to further God’s kingdom.

Knowledge, Wisdom

I love the book of Proverbs because it imparts practical knowledge, insights, and guidelines for our lives. We will spend the next 9 days going through the first 9 chapters in Proverbs. The first 9 chapters focuses on wisdom for young people. While I am no longer that young, the information is still practical for anyone at any age. The passage that stood out to me was verse 7, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. The foundation of knowledge is to fear the Lord and to honor, respect, and live in awe of God’s power. In a time when information and knowledge are readily available, wisdom continues to be scarce. Wisdom means more than having an abundance of knowledge, it is the attitude that affects all aspects of life. Without wisdom and discipline, applying knowledge means nothing.

Honor, Obedience, Wisdom

Ok, I’ll be the first one to admit that I don’t fully get the parable of the Shrewd Manager. To me it seems like the manager did something wrong and cheated his master out of what was rightfully his. It’s not until we get down to verse 13 that we start to understand where Jesus is going, “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” The point is that money can either be used for personal gain or to further the kingdom of God. In this case, the servant was able to use money to gain influence for himself and, more importantly, for his master. When we use what God has given us to advance His influence, we are being shrewd. It is less important how much money or influence we have and more important how we use it.

2012 Day 42 – Matthew 16

Knowledge, Obedience, Trust, Wisdom

It is funny how we always think we know best. In verse 22 Peter tries to convince Jesus that He will not be killed by the Jewish leaders and says, “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” The problem is that Jesus was following God’s perfect plan and in His plan the sacrifice was necessary to fulfill the bigger picture. Jesus’ replay in verse 23 was, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.” He knew that Peter’s response came from the desires of Satan not wanting God’s plan to be fulfilled. I don’t think Satan knew what the plan was, but the truth is he doesn’t need to know what it is; he is a disrupter and that is all he wants to do. For this reason it is imperative that we listen and follow God’s leading in our lives. He has the big picture and we need to trust and know He has it under control.

God, Knowledge, Pharisees, Relationship, Wisdom

I know people often look at the Bible as an ancient book that may not apply to our modern society and/or current issues, but I am always amazed at the Bible’s timeliness to the issues we face today. In verses 8 and 9 Jesus is talking about the Pharisees of that day and says, “8 ” ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.’”” When I read these verses I see Jesus talking to us as modern day believers and a modern day church. We are a society filled with people who like to interpret information to support their own selfish desires. This also applies to our church society where we selfishly interpret the Bible to fit doctrine or rules that make us feel better about ourselves. We need to spend less time worrying about what we think God is trying to tell us and spend more time building a relationship with Him to know what He really wants from us on a personal level.
