Knowledge, Wisdom

There is nothing more important than allowing God to lead, guide, and instruct us. Proverbs 8:10-11 says, 10 Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, 11 for wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her. There is literally nothing we could ever want that is more precious or compares to God.

Wisdom

In today’s reading, Proverbs 7:4 stood out to me, Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and call understanding your kinsman. Wisdom should be our sister that is not afraid to tell it like it is and understanding should be like family we trust and turn to when we have a question or need guidance. Neither wisdom or understanding should ever leave our side if we desire to live a righteous life.

Wisdom

When Solomon was a boy he was given the opportunity to have a request fulfilled by God. Solomon chose wisdom above all else and because of that God blessed Him beyond his request. Proverbs 4:7 says, The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Wisdom

There are many ways to gain wisdom. Some people are taught, while others gain it through life experiences. However, true wisdom can only come from God. Proverbs 2:6 says, For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. The more we listen to God’s direction for our lives and follow His leading, the more we gain wisdom that can only come from Him.

Knowledge, Wisdom

Today we begin a stretch where we will leave the New Testament for a few weeks and spend some time reading the book of Proverbs and a few select passages in the book Psalm. The book of Proverbs is rich in wisdom and knowledge. I challenge all of us to find passages that challenge and encourage us each day. In today’s reading in Proverbs 1, I wanted to share the Prologue of the book which gives the purpose and theme of Proverbs:

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:
2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

2014 Day 169 – 3 John 1

Knowledge, Wisdom

We are to be a reflection of Christ in all we do. 3 John 1:11 says, Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God. There are plenty of examples of evil in this world that we can use as examples. However, we are to be imitators of what is good, which is to be imitators of Christ because He is our perfect example. The sad part is many churches, and therefore the people in churches, are not great examples of Christ. We need to go to the source and follow what is said directly from God’s word.

The verse that stood out to me in today’s reading is Hebrews 5:14, But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. In order to have a deeper understanding of God, we must grow spiritually. God’s feast can only be obtained when we are spiritually ready to receive and digest it. As we grow, so does our capacity to accept and understand.

Grace, Mercy, Wisdom

Control over our own lives is sometimes hard to do. When we are children, we live according to what we want and when we want it. But as we grow in wisdom we learn to make choices based on potential consequences and desired outcomes. Ephesians 5:14-15 says, 15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 15 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. The biggest problem is not just in making wise choices, but also realizing the evils of this world are against us. Unless we live in the presence of God through the Holy Spirit, it is easy to quickly become hopeless. Through God’s presence and strength we are able to make wise choices and live in accordance to His grace and mercy.

Knowledge, Servant, Trust, Wisdom

As we end the book of 1 Corinthians, I can not help but notice what a great leader Paul is. He gives very detailed instructions and takes little to no praise for himself. He warns, instructs, and give praise when necessary. To often people get the wrong impression of what leadership looks like. It is not a cheerleader, dictator, tyrant, or manager. Leadership is about equipping others to do the work set before them. Paul realizes his role is not just to do, but to also equip others and future generations to carry out the message of the gospel throughout the world. There are many lessons to be learned here and Paul would be an interesting case study on effective leadership.

Knowledge, Wisdom

In today’s reading there is a lot of wisdom in 1 Corinthians 14:20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. When it comes to evil we should be like children who are cautious of everything. But when it comes to our thinking about spiritual things, we must work towards maturity and becoming adults who can be fully used by God.
