Today we get to do the first of our Psalms. Psalm 85:4 says, “Restore us again, O God our Savior, and put away your displeasure toward us.” Even in the Old Testament it shows that only God can lead us into salvation. Only He can restore to relationship and fellowship with Him.
Psalm 106 covers God’s judgment and salvation of His people from the time they left Egyptian captivity to the time they became captives of the Babylonian empire. The verse that stood out to me the most was “So he said he would destroy them— had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them.” (Psalm 106:23 NIV84) This is a great picture of what Jesus has done for all of us. He stood in the gap between our imperfection and God’s perfection. Praise be to Him for saving us from ourselves.
I thought it was interesting in 106 that the Psalmist kept repeating all the transgressions of the Jewish people. He could still be writing this chapter today! This chapter is just a quick glipse of what all of our lives look like as followers of Christ. I’m ashamed to say that too often as things go my way, I forget why I’m hereand get my priorities out of whack and seperate myself from Him. This is a great reminder to protect ourselves and resist the urge to get too caught up in ourselves.
I definitely agree with you brian. When I read psalm 106, I am reminded of my own life.
“But it wasn’t long before they forgot the whole thing (God saving them from Egypt), and they wouldnt wait to be told what to do. They only cared about pleasing themselves in that desert and provoked God with their insistent demands. He gave them exactly what they asked for- but along with it, they got an empty heart.”
I can definitely relate to this, sadly. whenever I stop feeling grateful for all the miracles He’s done for me personally, I feel like i have an empty heart. I dont ever want to make demands on God that arent His best for me…in order to avoid that, i need to trust that He knows what’s best.
Thank goodness for His love towards us! What a group of ungrateful people we are. How many times has He revealed Himself to us or “saved” us from ourselves and we like them continue to return to our doubts and sinful, rebellious ways?
I was thinking along the same lines about psalm 106, that it could be a description of my life.. How many times I forget God, leave Him out of my plans instead of consulting Him for His plan, or the amount of times I gripe, or even just the times I replace Him as a priority in my life with an idol of some type. The odd thing is that most of the psalm talks about how often His people forget His might or his love, but in vs 2, the very start of the psalm “who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord or declare all his praise.” oh that I’d take time daily to stop and remember. A great reason to journal Gods work, so we never forget his mighty deeds in our lives.
I loved the word picture in psalm 85:10-11… Made me think that it could be describing Christ… A prophesy of sorts, but that it could also describe what heaven is like. Either way it is a beautiful picture, just love the language used there.
