My favorite passage in today’s reading is verse 33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” As hard as it is to live in this world sometimes, it is comforting to know that Jesus has already overcome all the suffering we will face. He has already conquered the sin of this world and we can claim the peace of Christ in times of pain, sadness, and struggle.
Thanks again to Stan Mitchell:), the peace that Jesus talks about here was understood by the Jews to mean bringing together that which is broken. It meant wholeness. His disciples understood him to mean that he was leaving them a wholeness that the world couldn’t a) give or b) understand. And that is what we have to rest in. He has brought wholeness so that we can have incredible relationship not only to him, but to each other as well. Brought a new understanding of peace to me.
Well said, Sarah! It does bring a whole new perspective to what it means to have a relationship with Him. It is because of Jesus that we have a relationship in the first place, not because of anything we have done.
