God has blessed us so much that we could not recount all our blessings if we tried. David puts it perfectly in Psalm 40:5, Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders you have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare.
In verse 6, we see again David’s understanding that God was not after sacrifices but after our hearts. I don’t know why that touches me so deeply but it does. I suppose because it is one more piece of evidence that God truly was, is and will be the same. Its humans who change. Its humans he lives so dearly that he guides us along where we are and takes us where he wants us to be. I suppose it makes me evaluate some of the thingswe understand to commonplace or required and check it against the heart of God that I understand to this point.
I read this passage in both the CEV and Message versions. I really like how the Message puts it. Gave it fresh life. Specifically verse 6. ” Doing something for you, bringing something to you—that’s not what you’re after. Being religious, acting pious—that’s not what you’re asking for. You’ve opened my ears so I can listen.”
It’s God who opens our ears so we can hear. He opens our eyes so we can see. There’s a willingness on our part to be open but we once again see that God does it. We don’t take credit. This is his incredible story that we get to be a part of. How fun is that!? 🙂
