We’ve heard it before; Love is an action, not a verb. Verse 6 clearly supports that notion, And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. Whether we look at the Old or New Testament, we are commanded to love. In the Old, in the second part of Leviticus 19:18 it says …but love your neighbor as yourself. And in the New, Christ commands us in John 15:12, My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Love is put into practice when we are obedient to His commands. We can do this in a variety of ways; accepting people, listening, helping, giving, serving, refusing to judge, and a variety of other positive ways. In the end, it comes down to just doing and not just talking!
2012 Day 330 – 2 John 1

While I get what you’re saying, I continue to emphasize that it doesn’t matter how much we try and love others or how much we try and do the right things – in the end those are merely works done as an act of obedience. I struggled with this for so long. I knew I needed to love others and act lovingly towards them, but it was so hard. I would do it, but I knew it wasn’t coming from a place of authenticity. It was coming from a place of mere obedience. Again, that is not bad. It’s better than being mean! But I wanted it to be real. I wanted it to be authentic. So, as I do with everything, I asked God to help me with that. And he did. It took me being completely broken hearted. It took me seeing the depths of my brokeness and darkness. But I had to go there in order to really experience God’s deep, intense love for me. Then and only then was I able to come out of it and authentically love people. Of course, I still struggle, but it’s getting easier and easier everyday.
So, yes, sometimes we have to do things out of sheer obedience. But I encourage everyone who is in that phase to also be asking God to change their hearts so that love just naturally pours out of them.
Well said, Sarah!
